      June 7, 2013

My friends at Skullcandy surprised me by sending me their first gaming headset the SLYR. As we reported awhile back Skullcandy bought Astro Gaming which is known for their high-end gaming headsets. Skullcandy’s strategy was to introduce a entry level option priced much lower than Astro’s line. Starting with the SLYR at $80 going up to the Astro A50 at $300.

Skullcandy has been creating audio gear for a long time now- nearly a decade, as a matter of fact. In 2012 they acquired high-end audio headset manufacturer Astro Gaming. They’ve decided to keep the Astro name exclusive to their $200+ headset family, and are now re-entering the gaming headset market with the Skullcandy brand. Their new line-up consists of the PLYR1 and PLYR2 wireless headsets, as well as the SLYR wired headset.

Over the past year I have been fortunate enough to review some high-end gaming headsets.  The Astro A50’s for example are about as good as it gets.  They are wireless, have 7.1 surround sound capabilities, and I consider them second to none in terms of comfort; frankly they kick ass.  The only downside is that those suckers will cost you around $300.

The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is that the built in amp just can't get it loud enough. My gaming area is in an open room so sometimes it just wasn't there. These are a good price for what you get, they're super comfortable, stable and the stash-able mic is a great plus. the audio quality is good and the EQ was definitely thought out. I don't just use these for gaming so much but for video and audio editing. with superb comfort and sound this is a headphone you could wear for hours. The cables are super long, 15 feet or so I'd say. If you want to get a good gaming headset but don't need the top quality these are the way to go.

The Skull Candy Slyr gaming headset is amazing! The quality of the sound was magnificent, I could hear every footstep on all of the games I play. Also the quality of the mic was astounding, It was crystal clear communication between me and some friends (They too have Skull Candy Slyrs that I recommended for them). The comfort of these headphones is phenomenal! The ear cushions are like memory foam, and they can be wore for hours without having discomfort like other headset brands.

      Fantastic Headset for PC Gaming.

      March 11th, 2013

      by Dr. Love

This headset really is awesome. The price is very reasonable given the quality and durability of it. I use this piece of equipment for pretty much everything except for Xbox or Playstation. I mainly use it for PC gaming, it makes every explosion, every shot fired, and every piece of chatter from my teammates or NPCs crystal clear. The microphone is excellent, I use it to quickly relay information in competitive matches to my teammates (I play a medic). This mic not only has clear voice, but eliminates the majority of background noises. I would recommend and have recommended this headset to friends!

      One Problem.

      February 15th, 2013

      by ATexMessage

Great headset. I have had nearly no problems with them. The one problem I have run into is the mic. After a little under a month of using them for about 15 hours per week, the mic got very spotty for me. First, I was playing zombies on COD and my mic went out when playing with a friend. I unplugged it at the mic control and it was fine. Sometimes I would need to unplug it at the system and even at all three points before it would start working again. So thankfully Skullcandy gives a warranty because I will be sending them in for a new pair. Overall, I would give this produce a better rating than most other headsets of equal or lesser value.

      Worth The Hype

      February 7th, 2013

      by Khi

These headphones are true quality, I just got the them today, and ran some test with them. It is noted that you have to push the cord in ALL the way until you hear a snap-ish sound, this will make sure you get full audio and not instruments (when listen to music) I tested them on the 360, very good sound experience I must say. Everything what heard and voices were clear. The EQ3 is very helpful for sound control without touching the remote (because these phones can cancel out the game tv volume at curtain volumes) Next I tried out the music experience. I like metal/rock so I gave the headphones a test for clarity, vocals and instruments. I heard each instrument so fluently I could possibly play by ear what I head. I only had them have way turned up because any higher and I'm at a concert with how much clarity you at those volumes, I recommend have volume to keep them working, for me my music is good quality so it's loud at 50% versus 75%. I also tested for bass with dubstep, I use Skrillex for this one. Point blank bass drops were so defined even my brother told me it stays with you once you take the headphones off. It was depth and not muddy, true to supreme sound

The setup is so easy. If using the hdmi all you need is an hdmi optical audio adapter, and after that its cake. I would reccomend this to anyone.

I bought this headset and loved everything about it except one thing, there's no mic monitoring. You cant hear your own voice in the headset like most other headsets, so i find myself yelling just to hear what I'm saying. I would recommend this headset if that's not an issue for you because the sound quality is amazing for its price. It just feels like I'm deaf and kind of ruins the online experience a little bit.

OMG this headset sounds amazing, I plugged it into a box that gives me 7.1 surround sound with stereo headsets and I must say: WOW. The bass is amazing, as well as the highs compared to my turtle beach X12 I had before this one & I have to say this is 1000X better! The only problem is the ear cushions sit on your ear (instead of over it like most headsets) and It got unconformable after a while. After I got it set up, I couldn't figure out how to use the control (As I would turn the game volume down, the voice would get extremely loud). There was no "good" instruction manuel included but I did figure it out eventually

      GREAT CHOICE FOR COMPETITIVE GAMING

      December 27th, 2012

      by M3GUHTRON

This headset I was comparing to the Tritton Detonators or the Turtle Beach X12. I shouldn't have cause these are in a league all their own. Being a competitve gamer means you need a headset that allows you to hear where gunshots are coming from, footsteps, all while being comfortable on your head for some LONG hours of gaming. This headset is perfect for that. You can tell they are trying to make a quality product similar to the Astro A40 headset. While the quality is great, these are easily the most comfortable headset I have EVER worn, and I have had a lot of headsets. If you're in the market for a good gaming headset and torn between what I listed, SLYR hands down! Also, for those of you that wear glasses or Gunnars so contacts don't dry out, this headset goes great with them. I have worn both with this headset and it's extremely comfortable.

      December 27th, 2012

      by Kyle

The product feels very comfortable and I like that it can be used for more then just the Xbox. The only problem that I found about the product is that you have to use a port on the Xbox for the headset to work. As in turtle beaches you can plug the USB port into a phone charger port and plug that into the wall and it still works. So whoever has a Fat ( older version) it will take up a USB and you only have 3 so therefore you can't use 2 corded controllers + wifi adapter... Otherwise it's a great product for its money worth.

      Superior sound quality?

      December 17th, 2012

      by Jamie P

I have been a loyal customer to SkullCandy for a few years now so it was an easy decision to try out their new line of gaming headsets. My ideal situation was purchasing an Astro headset (now owned by skullcandy) but it wasn't at the price point I was looking for. SkullCandy almost met this need as it usually does, compromising frame quality for audio capability. In this case, the actual frame of the headset looks beautiful (great design SC) while working with cost-effective materials. Unfortunately, I feel the intricate design meant a compromise in sound quality. Sure, it beats my apple earbuds, but hardly. I feel audio is adequate for gaming and voice communication, but realistically you're missing out on some of the greater soundscapes. Another downside is the cord control for PC gaming (primary use of all gaming headsets). I have to say, it is outrageous to manage this tentacled beast of a wiring system. If you plan on using this headset for your PC then you'll need to use a separate AV to 1/8th inch adapter if you have any hope of using the audio control. Otherwise, you're just plugging in an eighth inch and getting no functionality other than the monitors. It gets the job done. It looks great doing it. Ultimately, it wasn't executed as well as I would expect from SkullCandy for the price. I'd say take some extra time to invest in the highest tier of their product line, or fulfill elsewhere.

I just recently got these headsets and I am really happy with them. I searched around for a long time to find a decent gaming headset that could be used as normal headphones for work without looking like a tool, and carrying a bunch of wires around. This headset does exactly what I needed. With the mic folded up you can barely tell it's there. As far as gaming sound, they sound great. Obviously surround sound would be better, but overall I'm very happy with the sound quality when playing COD etc. Guns, Footsteps etc. I've been using the precision setting. Sound for using with iPod etc is good as well, and they block out enough outside noise so that I can focus on my work. These headsets are extremely comfortable and I use them all day at work without sore ears or headache. The build quality seems good as well. My one complaint is that I'm having a hard time finding the right balance on the equalizer for Game/Voice volume. Two separate controls would have been easier to fine tune. I don't think there is a more versatile headset in this price range, Excellent buy!

For years the gaming headphone market has been dominated by a select few companies. Skullcandy tried a while ago to jump on the opportunity given with this promising market but the products they offered were not up to par with that of the competitors. That has all changed dramatically. The new line-up has defiantly put Skullcandy into the gaming headphone market. I recently purchased a pair of white SLYRs and dang they are amazing. First off the comfort is amazing. The earpads are made of soft cloth and plush padding. The headphones are much bigger than they look and the pads are crazy soft. The head band is supportive and soft so long gaming sessions are not a problem. The microphone folds easily and is very sturdy so you won't have to worry about it snapping off. The headphones are made out of a hard plastic so they feel lightweight but also kinda cheap, and somehow at the same time they feel sturdy and durable. The cables are very thick and feel like quality. Everything came packaged in a very nice and cool looking box. The sound was just awesome. The soundstage was a bit too narrow compared to Mix Masters but for gaming it was just fine. The different GMX mixer modes were cool but I personally didn't use it all that often. The Bass at times was slightly overwhelming but very controlled. The highs and mids are very clean and all together balanced and tight. The vocals come through clearly and the mic is better than most that I have used. Yes i very much recommend these headphone for the outrageous comfort, great sound quality, and amazing good looks.

This headset is a stereo headset. It's no 7.1 surround sound, but it gets the job done like a boss. VERY good for it's 80 dollar price tag. In my opinion, it's probably worth ALOT more, but I'm not complaining. This headset is wired, with ALOT of wires running through your room, that's not much of a problem. The wires are SUPER long, meaning you can get up and do some stuff to a certain extent. On the wire, you have a Skullcandy's version of Astro's mixamp. 3 Equilizer settings, a mute button, and volume controls. The SLYR was clearer, and what I noticed the most, much better bass. Love the fact that you can un-jack from the gaming wire, and use them as normal headsets for your smartphone, laptop, or any mobile device. Also, the EZ stash boom makes it almost unnoticeable.

      Amazing headset all around.

So I got the SLYR headset in today, all I have to say is one word. One little word. Amazing, The sound quality is better than my Astro A50's I got this headset for when I travel. That is no longer the case, these sound better hands down, and look much better than the A50's I think. And if anyone is wondering about the hookups There are a total of 3 cables and they give plenty of movement room. The cables you get are as follows. A 3.5mm male to male end, One end goes into the headset, the other into the volume control/ built in eq. This cable has the mic built in so it should work in most phones. (I'm not sure about the iPhone but I do know it works in my droid) Then you have the main cord, it's long... No really it's super long I would say at least 15' and for good reason, this has the USB for your computer on it, along with the pass through for the Xbox and PS3. Only the USB is needed for the PC, but this headset get's it's power from usb, so you will need it for the Xbox and PS3 as well. Then you have the Xbox cord It will plug into the main cord setup, right next to the 3.5mm jack. and into the controller for the Xbox. The headset it's self is crazy light(8.2 oz for the headset alone), I can and have been wearing it for almost 12 hours now. No fatigue at all. The cloth on the ear cushions should hold up quite well, and are breathable, so you don't get hot. The only down side to this in my opinion is that it let's a lot of sound bleed through. Also they fit my ears fine once I got accustomed to them. but if you have large ears they may be a bit tight at first. The mic quality is near flawless, my friends I game with say it's clear as day with no distortion. Not to mention when it's up you can't even tell it's there. All in all, I think it's well worth the money, this $80 headset beats out my $300 A50's hands down.

Fell slightly short of my expectations, but still a decent headset.

After my old gaming headset broke after 2 years of use, I figured it was time to upgrade to a new headset. And when I read that Skullcandy was making one, I immediately got interested. As soon as Skullcandy announced it, I got excited and ordered it as soon as it came out, even though I knew that I would be taking a chance with it, but since Skullcandy was making it, I figured that it would be a solid choice for a headset, especially with the lifetime warranty that came with it. As soon as I got it, I unboxed it and started playing some games with it. The first thing I realized was how comfortable the headset was. I played for a few hours and almost forgot I was actually wearing it. The sound quality is decent; although the biggest problem I’ve been having was that the headset is that it would make crackling and popping sounds on it when I was playing Call of Duty and Battlefield occasionally. It even did this while listening to music too, which is disappointing. Besides that though, the sound quality is decent. The bass is nice and plentiful, but not over powering (of course, you could use the EQ Built into the headphone if you want more Bass), and the Mids and Highs are decent too. The EQ is pretty nice too, there is a pretty noticeable difference between what each setting does. I also like how you can hide the mic completely on the headset so if you do decide to use it on your Ipod it doesn’t look silly to other people around you. The final complaint is that on my PC, I can hear a slight humming sound coming from the headphones, but it isn’t to noticeable unless you have the volume >75%. Overall, it is a decent headset, and I think that it should be considered if you are looking for a headset somewhere in the <$100.00 Range.

    The Rebirth of Skullcandy Gaming

I am currently an employee in the Skullcandy Gaming division. This is a first look at the SLYR and some of my favorite features. The SLYR is the best cross platform gaming headset on the market at 79.99. The best feature about the SLYR is the EZ STASH MIC feature, which gives you the option to use it outside the gaming world. Plus, you can use the SLYR on an Xbox 360, a PS3, or your PC. On top of that the SLYR detaches from the GMX IN-LINE-MIXER so you can use it with your mobile devices. The comfort rating on the SLYR between 1 to 4 hours is 10 out 10; this is maybe the most comfortable headset we’ve ever made.

I vividly remember my friend purchasing one of their first models back in 2009. The manufacturer has changed a lot since then. In 2011, Skullcandy purchased the renowned pro gaming headphone maker Astro Gaming. This year Skullcandy has decided to reenter the gaming headphone market with their new line of SLYR Gaming Headphones. With Astro now a part of the family brand, can Skullcandy make quality gaming headphones for an affordable price?

Over the past year I have been fortunate enough to review some high-end gaming headsets.  The Astro A50’s for example are about as good as it gets.  They are wireless, have 7.1 surround sound capabilities, and I consider them second to none in terms of comfort; frankly they kick ass.  The only downside is that those suckers will cost you around $300.

Low end distortion - Halo 4

    Hi,

Got the SLYR headset the other day and it appears that when there is a lot happening in game (halo 4) eg. explosions, gunfire etc, I am getting a bit of distortion. When it isn't as hectic, the clarity is great.

Is this a limitation of the 40mm drivers or do I have a dud set of headphones? PS I am using the middle (2) setting of "Supreme".

    Thanks

I have tried them on and the cord is about 5m but I went on and bought the tritton 720 and they are more comfortable for long gaming sessions. Overall, the slyr's are a GREAT concept with the buttons on the side and with style but I would buy the tritton 720's or tritton 720+, they are more comfortable and have better sound including clearer highs and deeper/heavier bass and a 10' cord

When having the headset plugged in through usb on my PC, I am hearing my own voice feedback regardless of whether the mic is muted on the PC, or muted on the built in EQ along the cord, meaning it's in the headset itself, not the programming, so I'm wondering if this is a voice feedback feature standard to these headsets, or something that I can fix or need a new pair?

Low end distortion - Halo 4

    Customer avatar
    by
    SJP

    Thanks

    Answer:
The PLYR 1 will be released with 7.1 Dolby sound, the SLYR utilizes stereo sound. It is also going to depend heavily on what and where you game, and if wireless is something you can not live without. The PLYR1 is a wireless headset, the SLYR is wired.

    Answer:
I have tried them on and the cord is about 5m but I went on and bought the tritton 720 and they are more comfortable for long gaming sessions. Overall, the slyr's are a GREAT concept with the buttons on the side and with style but I would buy the tritton 720's or tritton 720+, they are more comfortable and have better sound including clearer highs and deeper/heavier bass and a 10' cord

When having the headset plugged in through usb on my PC, I am hearing my own voice feedback regardless of whether the mic is muted on the PC, or muted on the built in EQ along the cord, meaning it's in the headset itself, not the programming, so I'm wondering if this is a voice feedback feature standard to these headsets, or something that I can fix or need a new pair?

you use your hdmi for the picture, and plug the headset usb in the ps3 and the red and white plugs into the tv, then use the ps3 sound plugs and plug them into the headphone jacks that you put into the tv. You should then have all the sound and mic workin.
