50/50: Wired Review- Skullcandy 50/50
July 6, 2011
Publication: Wired
We tested two models from Skullcandy, the 50/50s and the Fix. These 50/50s, the cheaper of the two, are sort of half way between in-ear headphones and traditional earbuds, and they provide decent sound for a decent pricetag ($50).
The 11mm drivers provide a richer audio experience than other buds under $50, but they've got other issues.
Read More...The seal is tight enough that you can turn the volume down a few notches and save your eardrums, but an almost constant low-level buzzing persists as soon as the buds are plugged in.
The remote's a mixed bag, too: in-line volume controls give just the right level of responsiveness and the mic picks up your voice just fine, but the person on the other end sounds like they're calling from across the country.
The best thing they have going for them is their level of isolation. For listening anywhere with a significant amount of background noise, the sealed fit is superior. The 50/50s come with three sizes of silicone tips, and the smalls provided a snug and comfortable fit even for my small ear canals. The construction is sturdier than most in this range, as well. -- Christina Bonnington
WIRED Good bass response when you get the seal correct. Wrapped cable makes for easy storing and helps cut down on cable noise.
TIRED The skull detailing is the brand's signature flourish, but man, it made me feel like 13-year old emo skater kid. Persistent static drone is irritating.

50/50: Skullcandy 50/50
July 6, 2011
Publication: MacWorld
Until recently I hadn’t paid much attention to Skullcandy’s headphones and headsets—the company’s focus on extreme sports, punk- and hip-hop-inspired aesthetics, and too-clever product names (case in point: “Smokin’ Buds”) suggested I might not be in the target audience.
Read More...However, many of Skullcandy’s products—particularly its inexpensive "canalbud" models—have gotten good buzz from headphone geeks at HeadRoom (an online headphone dealer) and on the Head-Fi headphone forums, so I was curious to see how the Skullcandy 50/50 compared to other canalbud headsets I’ve tested.
A quick refresher: Canalbuds are headphones that essentially split the difference—in design, and often in price—between traditional earbuds and in-ear-canal (“canalphone”) models. (See our in-ear-canal headphone primer for more details.) Since they fit partially in the ear canal, they can block some external noise and form an acoustic seal that improves bass performance. However, they don’t block as much sound as true canalphone models, and, as with canalphones, getting a proper fit can be tricky, the cord can produce unwanted microphonic noise in a listener’s ear, and using the headset function can be weird due to the occlusion effect of having your ears plugged while talking.
The 50/50 (named, according to Skullcandy, because they’re “half mic, half bud, and all boom”) comes with pairs of small, medium, and large rubber eartips, as well as a circular, black-nylon carrying case. The 50/50’s earpieces are primarly white plastic with green-plastic and metal accents (including the Skullcandy logo). The right-hand section of the 50/50’s green cables hosts a white, Apple-style, three-button (control, volume up, and volume down) inline remote/microphone pod. A white-plastic piece connects the left and right cables, and the cable ends in a white-plastic, straight miniplug. The plastic feels dense and resilient, and it should hold up well in active use. The 50/50 is also available in black/chrome, white/chrome, black/blue, and black/red versions.
The 50/50’s earpieces are easy to fit properly in the ear, and they rest at a moderate depth that provides good isolation from outside noise. However, the earpieces hurt my ears after an hour or so, thanks to the large, short earpieces—though this issue may be specific to my ear anatomy. The 50/50’s inline remote works well, although I had a little trouble distinguishing between the three buttons; I would have preferred the buttons to be better defined.
I tested the 50/50’s audio performance in a variety of settings (home, office, street, and bus) listening to both compressed and lossless music. I used the 50/50 directly out of my iPhone’s headphone jack as well as through a HeadRoom Total BitHead headphone amplifier. Listening to the 50/50, there was no doubt that the headset was designed to focus on bass. In terms of pure bass volume, they beat out other bass-heavy models such as the Radius Atomic Bass (), Klipsch Image S4i (), and V-moda Vibe II (). Low bass was excellent—kick drums sounded the best I’d heard on canalbuds, and managed to suggest some of the physical impact you’d get from a large set of speakers. Mid- and upper-bass were over-emphasized, however, making many recordings sound muddy. Switching to my trusty Comply eartips tamed the 50/50’s bass a bit, but it was still much more than I wanted. When not overwhelmed by the bass, midrange and treble frequencies sounded good and were well-defined.
(The one place this extra bass was welcome was when gaming on my iPhone: The 50/50’s low end enhances explosions in action games such as N.O.V.A. and gives more kick to the bass-heavy soundtracks of games such as Canabalt and Geometry Wars.)
In my testing, the 50/50’s microphone performance was below average. Compared to the iPhone’s included earbuds, as well as to the best microphones in my previous roundup, test recordings of my voice made with the 50/50 were on the quiet side and sounded thin due to a lack of lower frequencies. A friend confirmed this assessment in a test call, commenting that I sounded “distant” compared to the iPhone 4’s built-in microphone. In other words, I wouldn’t buy the 50/50 primarily for phone calls, but it’s fine for taking the occasional call while you’re listening to music.
Despite finding its bass to be often overwhelming, I think the 50/50 is a nice headset for certain audiences. I know there are plenty of listeners out there—particularly those who listen to electronic music and hip-hop, and those who play games on their portable devices—who will love the bass, and I have no trouble recommending this model to them, especially given its price. It’s also worth considering if the look of your headphones is important (and you like the Skullcandy style.)

Great Headphones With 1 Flaw
April 23rd, 2013
by Amber
I love these headphones. Im pretty much a snob when it comes to the quality of any headphone I use and Skullcandy has always been a go to for me. These headphones were comfortable and I constantly use them. Night and day because Im a college kid. they deliver great rich sound, clear vocals, and the right amount of bass for me. I've had friends say its not enough for them, but for me its perfect. If you're looking for a headphone that gives you a sick amount of bass, these might not be for you, but try them out before you say no. the mic and remote are a necessity for me. Its make or break if headphones dont have them. However the mic during calls was lacking (making the person you're talking to sound far away) but it was clear. The only thing that is a major con for me is the way that the jack and wire area is made. In the beginning it seemed really sturdy and strong and it seemed it would be able to hold up with daily use of being slightly tugged, snagged, and being able to hold up with removing and inserting the headphone in. To me this seems like a problem with all skullcandy in ear headphone wires. Even though these headphones are starting to do the "no sound" in one ear, Skullcandy has an amazing warranty policy and it takes care of replacing them. I just wish they would work on the build and stability of the jack and that area.

I am a dedicated listener of heavy metal and classic rock and I would have to say this are amazing. I have a hard time deciding between the Titans and these for my favorite Skullcandy headphones. Awesome quality for the price, my pair finally gave up this week when the left side failed after close to 2 years of faithful daily duty. They have great sound, nice balance between bass and treble. They can handle the double bass of most faster metal without giving up. I did not realize when I bought these that they were not android compatible with the mic (and that was my bad,not Skullcandy's) , but after listening to these for almost 2 years I still love them.

Really Good Buds
April 19th, 2013
by Kev
I had a broken pair of Heshs, and got an $80 voucher, (which is sick). Wanted to try one of their gaming headsets, but learnt the warrenty coupon doesnt apply to the gaming products. I wasnt mad, but a bit dissapointed. I have uprocks and ink'd buds, but thought this was a good opportunity to try out some pricier buds. They have a really nice sound and range of deep lows to nice highs. Definitely nicer than the ink'd, and depending on how often you'll use them, they're gonna be worth the extra bit of coin. Got the navy which look a lot more black than blue, but kinda in a good way. Overall, pretty happy!

I had a pair of Titans (which I loved) and I left them at the golf course one day so after months of review and comparison between multiple brands and models I decided these were the ones for me. I have never enjoyed a pair of earbuds this much in my life! The bass is thick and punchy but not overpowering. The kind of bass that creates a suction in your brain but at the same time allows the highs to come through on top. I do have to say, however, that the build quality isn't the best in the world but with a lifetime warranty I don't really care. Bottom line: Best earbuds ever, don't waste your money on anything else.

I just got mine today and I'm really happy with them. They feel really comfortable and I use the smallest buds as they fit me the best and don't fall out. The sound quality is great! Trust me, the bass is awesome too and I love the design of my White/Chrome ones. The wire is cool as its kinda flat and overall I'm happy with them.

I just got these today in the mail, and they made a great first impression. I bought these because my Beats Solos broke. With Beats, you are paying for the name brand more than a pair of good headphones. These 50/50s I like much better because the sound quality is the same as Beats by Dre without the huge price tag. Highly recommended!

Too rubbery
January 31st, 2013
by Francisco
I've had my 50/50 for over a year now, and use it almost everyday on my commute. Although I do like the sound quality (for the price) and the noise insulation (not hearing street noise is almost worth using it alone), I have a LOT of problem with it staying in place. Not the fitting, wich is good with the 3 sized buds, but the cord is SOOO rubbery that it will stick to EVERYTHING, and I do mean that. If you wear a collared shirt to work (and I do), forget about it, because the volume/mic thing will grab your collar like a castaway to a life jacket. It just grabs on to it everytime I turn my head, and it is really annoying, wich makes the 50/50 very frustrating to use. My suggestion is to make the cord less rubbery and to place the volume control and mic half an inch down or up the cord. Seriuosly, I'd love this thing if it wasn't such a hassle.

Surprisingly Dissappointing
January 23rd, 2013
by Hannah
I was surprisingly disappointed with these headphones. Within a month, the volume function on these headphones stopped working. At high volumes these headphones sound, as I like to call it, like they're in a tin can. At any volume, the bass is weak. They don't fit quite right, they always feel like they're going to fall out. And, not quite sure if this is just user error or a malfunction, but the keep shocking me. I do though, really enjoy the sound isolation in these headphones. At nearly any volume, they block quite a bit of outside noise. I find that my old in-ear Chops sounded better overall, heck, even my JVC marshmallows sounded better bass-wise.

So i'm sitting in class with my 50/50s on. All the sudden everybody stands up. I'm like "okaayy??" so I stand up too. Then everbody starts walking to the door. At this point I take my headphones out and to my suprise, the fire alarm was sounding! I was not listening to loud music either! They need to advertise these as noise canceling if they aren't already. PS: My school's fire alarms don't flash in the class rooms. That is partially why I didn't know they were sounding Overall: Great product. If you are looking for Hard, Pounding Bass you have come to the right place! They stay in your ear and you can hear every instrument that is playing. Good job Skullcandy, best headphones I have ever put in my ears!

I got these after returning my titans for the second time. First off, I have to say that these headphones have a great look them. They're modern looking, and chic. I do have a problem with the comfort. Ever since I got these, the right earbud hasn't been fitting in my ear as well as the other. It gets really irritating when it falls out. The control works really well. Soundwise, I think that they could do better. The bass is nice but definitely not as good as the titans. They block out a good amount of noise, but the titans are better. Overall, these re good earbuds, but I personally think that they could do better.

These buds have incredible bass. I owned a pair of bose earbuds and these blow those away sound wise. The big problem is quality. I'm on my third pair now, my left earbud stops working after a few months. They replace them under the lifetime warranty which is good, but the problem is that I'm stuck without earbuds for 4 to 6 weeks every three months. I wouldn't recommend these because of quality issues

A highly afordable well made in ear earphone

After doing extensive research i agreed to try these as they seemed to be quite affordable and with superior sound quality compared to its compeditors. When i bought these i was pleasantly surprised with the strength these earphones posesed compared to other skullcandy earphones. It would seem that these would stand the test of time better than some reviews say. It has a great balance and decent clarity, sound wise, perfect for nearly any type of music. But where these stand out in sound is definately in the bass. It also has a perfect amount of cord(flat), 1.3m. Also the in ear gels all fit fine, while i prefer the small ones as they fit better. The mic and volume/track controll work perfectly fine for apple products.

Best In Ear Headphones I Have Ever Owned/Used
November 27th, 2012

I got these from my brother as a birthday present, and I love them. They sound better than any in ear headphones I have ever used/owned. They are well balanced, have good bass (but not too much bass), and are clear. Also, they look awesome, have a mic 3, and have a HARD SHELL CASE. I barely have any complaints, but they are not the most comfortable and they don't stay in your ear that well. They do stay in your ear pretty well though, and are pretty comfortable.

October 26th, 2012

I have small ears and got used to avoiding earbuds. I did lots of research and these were the most recommended earbuds for small ear canals. I'm glad to say the reviews are spot on. The smallest earbud silicone tip (set comes w/3) fit like a glove and keep the buds in my ears, even with shaking from jogging. The sound quality is amazing compared to headsets that come gratis with phones/music players, and the mic is perfectly decent. I like the flat cord; so much less tangling in my backpack. One thing to note -- the cord is longer than normal, presumably so you can use the earbuds with different kinds of computers, or maybe to accommodate taller people. This isn't a con in my opinion, but if you're 5'6" or shorter, you may have to get creative to keep it from snagging on things.

The 50/50 is a well-balanced mixture of audio. It has everything from crystal clear highs, precise mids, etc. However, the bass sounds like a muddy thump, lacking the clarity it claims to have. For the price, the bass is only decent. Comfort is exceptional, with no additional weight burdening your ears when you have it on. Also, it comes with large and small tips, allowing you to adjust to your likings.

Well sad to say my pair finally went on me after about a year, first the mic went then the right ear went. Even though they no longer work, I have to say that were some pretty good headphones compared to the (apple, jvc, and sony) pair i still have as far as sound quality and fit. I give them 3 stars because of their short life span, and that's being careful with them. I wont be buying anymore of these UNTIL either the price comes down or the build quality changes.. I'll still recommend these based on sound quality and fit, but I really hope they build these a bit better.

I use them commuting, biking, on the mountain, and anywhere else that I don't want to completely drown out what is around me (the noise isolation is not the best, and I like that.# The only issue I have is that I am about to receive my third pair via warranty replacement in about 18 months. With the first pair, the left speaker died suddenly. With the second pair, the mic/control unit cracked in half and eventually killed the left speaker again. If this third pair is still of the same shoddy quality #and I have no reason to think otherwise) then I am moving on. For now, I still recommend this product.

I just got these earphones today, and i have to say i am amazed by the sound. The bass is really good on these and the higher treble is still clear. However after about 30m after having these in they start to become uncomfortable. I am using the smaller buds on the end and i sounds just as good as the other sizes. overall these are good earphone

Best of Both Worlds

The skullcandy 50/50 is both chic and boasts pretty good sound quality, and is thus a definite recommend. However, the big earbuds do not fit all ear sizes and hurts the ear when worn for a long period of time. Only one pair of small earbuds are given, which is insufficient. The case is really compact and cute.

I've been in the market for ear buds for a while now, and I was stuck between these, and a pair of House of Marley's. I was in MC Sports today, and I saw these. Picked them up, and used them. They're FANTASTIC! Best ear buds I've ever owned, by far.

Durable Headphones With Awesome Bass
August 6th, 2012
by Trevor
If you are in the market for a good quality pair of earbuds this is the best place to look. The bass is mind blowing to say the least and comparable to many over-ear headsets. I can hear every sound that comes out from deep bass to high soprano. They are also quite comfortable for about 4-5 hours. After that they become a bit irritating but a 10 minute break will fix that. How durable they are truly amazes me. After accidently leaving them in my pocket they went through the washing machine. After looking for them for a few days i finally found them in my pocket. Terrified that I had broken my $60 headphones i rushed to my computer and brought up a song...they still worked. After 3 months of being put through tons of heavy dubstep I have noticed little drop in sound quality. If at all possible get the travel case. It keeps them nice and protected from the elements. If you are looking for a great pair of quality earbuds look no further.

Overall, an excellent entry-level, low price pair of In-Ear Monitors
August 4th, 2012
by V.pic
While Skullcandy has recently begun to improve its product selection for the Audiophile (professional headphones, earbuds, etc.), it still seems to be a bit underappreciated in that community. The 50/50's are an example of entry-level In-Ear buds that are excellent for daily use with out-put systems that aren't professional grade. Their sound-signature has a heavy emphasis on bass, which is a tad stronger than what I'd prefer, but is still done nicely and doesn't detract from the overall composition of sound — which is rich and warm. The price is reasonable, and they would blow the stock-Apple earbuds out of the water any day, all day. One thing I LOVE about them is how long the cord is. I can't tell you how useful that extra length can be in an endless amount of situations. Generous cord length is much, much appreciated. I left out one star for one reason: when the cord moves, there's interference. [When I say 'interference', I don't mean of the electrical kind. What I mean is the sound of the cord fidgeting, or hitting my chest when I am walking reverberates in a way loud enough to sometimes even overpower the audio playing.] But other than that one issue, I'm prettymuch satisfied with this purchase. ッ

Great, but with some cons
August 3rd, 2012
by Jake V
These are great headphones! I'm not sure how they pack so much bass into them, but it works! They handle highs and lows decently. My only concerns is the price and the comfort. The price seems a little high for what you're getting. Also, since I've had them about 5-6 months, the sound quality has gone done a small amount. Also I have been having trouble getting a good seal on them in my ears. They pop out of your ears really easily if you are not paying attention to the cord. Other than that, they are crazy good casual headphones.

The sound is extremely great I loved them. Key word LOVED them the jack gave out less than a month and I couldn't hear out of my left ear bud. SkullCandy needs to make that area ALOT more stronger. I'm currently in the lifetime warrenty clam. With all that said I hope they make the jack or wires around that area stronger then I would recommend them. But the sounds was great I give them that.

Best Buds I've Owned
July 11th, 2012

I have had Skulcandy's 50/50 earbuds for almost a year now, and they still work just the same as the day I got them. They cancel out a lot of noise just by the fact that they are in-ear phones that seal very well inside your ear. They include three sizes of interchangeable rubberized pads that should fit just about anyone. The bass is amazing. I have never had a pair of earbuds that delivers that much bass, however it still produces a good balance on a range of levels. The Apple earbuds that come with a new iPod sound like a pair of tin cans compared to these. The earbuds never fall out, but they could be a little bit more comfortable. Still, these are WAY more comfortable than your average earbuds. If you are looking for good quality earbuds without paying for something extremely expensive, buy these.

So I had a pair of the Smokin' Buds last year. They were okay, but the buds started to go out after about a month, and soon they became useless. HOWEVER......I was looking for some fairly affordable earbuds, and I stumbled across the 50/50's. All I have to say is HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. For such a small product, these guys really deliver. The bass is really thumping, but it doesn't drown out any other parts of the track. Really nothing bad I can say about these earbuds. They're superb, and I will surely be looking into getting more skullcandy products soon.

Maybe I will say it is a bit over priced online but it really is worth it no matter what. Luckily mine were half off but i would pay double to get one of these. The bass on these are terrific and they don't sound muddy or drown out the highs and mids. The only problem I found is that it wakes a while to get a good fit and seal so the bass can be full potential and they fall out a lot.

They were my favorite earbuds ever! Mine did break, but that's because I play the drums and when I'm playing along with music sometimes I get to into it and accidently yank them out of my ears and they hit the rim of a drum. I'm gonna get more with my warranty, but I'm disappointed because they got rid of all of the cool colors. I WANT BLU WITH CHROME OR GOLD OR SOMETHING. But other then the lack of awesome colors, these were absolutely amazing! I took them with me everywhere I went! I recommend you buy them!

While I do not own a pair of the 50/50's myself I have sampled them and let me just tell you right off the bat that they are truly a masterpiece. The sound and bass output is amazing and still manages to leave the song complete in all aspects without dropping or reducing different synths or beats. I intend n getting a pair for myself as soon as I can. A bit pricey for in-ear earbuds but I can assure you, you won't be sorry you bought them. I truly beIieve skullcandy has set the standard for earbuds and headphones (except for maybe beats by dr.dre, but who wants to pay 100 bucks for a pair of earbuds that will be stolen the second you lay them down on a bench or something) To sum it all up, get these and you will be blown away by ingenuity. And bass. I can't forget the bass. (P.S for all of you people who got bad earbuds, I'm sorry you got a pair that were ruined. However, that does not mean you should whine on a review just because you are one of the few people who got some dysfunctional earbuds. Either take it out on your pillow or trade the earbuds in for a new pair.)

jack failed
May 2nd, 2012
by Cha
Before i bought the 50/50, i had a an unknown brand in-ear headphones. I tested the quality in sound and the 50/50 was way better. Bass was kicking. I took it for a jog and it did not fall out of ear. However, i've only had the 50/50 for about 2 months and the jack failed on me. My listening device is a phone and i keep it in my pant pocket when listening to my music. I believe this contributed to the failed jack. The wire is flat so it could only bend one way or the other. This product along with all of skullcandy's headphones is not compatible with non-iphones/iproducts(correct me if i'm wrong). What i meant is you could only listen. You cant control volume or talk on the phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy phone and I wish skullcandy could make their headphones compatible with other listening devices besides Apple.

The 50/50's are a well rounded pair of headphones, and they've yet to fail me thus far. I mostly listen to House, and these puppies bring the bass. I had a pair of Agents and they shorted out on me, so I got these and the bass and lows are honestly comparable to the over the ear experience I had with those. Be careful of the age of your iPod Classic - 2007 doesn't work
April 29th, 2012

The box for these and the inside flyer says these are compatible with "iPod Classic." I was happy and bought them to use with my Classic and for limited use with my iPhone 4S. I was VERY disappointed when I put them on in the car and the controls did not work. I got home and looked at the web site and finally HERE it says they are only compatible with iPod Classic 2009 or later. I have a 2007. It is deceiving because it was not until I got them home that I realized this was the situation. I took them back as they were good, but if they didn't work for volume or tracking on my iPod, they were no good for me.

The 50/50s are great. They give excellent clear sound. The bass is really strong and it just gives you a great way to listen to music. Not to mention that they are really loud. I have an iPod Touch 4g and if I want a group of people to listen to a song, I just plug in my headphones and put them on max volume. The 50/50s are louder than my iPod's speakers which just makes them even better. Just one problem though, when I wear them and want to walk from one place to another they just keep falling off. But other than that have to say that these are just the best headphones ever and give you good value at a good price. So yeah... Get these amazing headphones!!! =P

Bought for normal use, but also wanted to use with ipad. Works good with ipad, but sort of useless really because the mic on the ipad works just fine. But when use with other product such as your computer, it will have a digital interference/distortion sound associated to it. i think this is mainly due to the built-in mic and that it is ONLY guarantee to work on APPLE products. I would suggest this product only if you're just gonna use it on the iphone as a handsfree ear piece, or on the Mac book or apple computers ONLY. Any use with other product might not be compatible.

These headphones are amazing!!! I took a chance getting these as my first pair of earbuds from skullcandy. I was impressed. It was like having subs in my ears and it sounds like the artist is right in front of me. I'm going to upgrade to heavy medals because I want the biggest speakers possible but these sound great and they fit great because, having smaller ears I use the small silicone gels and they fit great. I was worried they wouldn't fit because I could never get them to stay in but guiding me to not like these kind of earbuds but these made me realize that they are great and very comfortable.
