Hesh 2: Supreme Sound and Price with Skullcandy Hesh 2 Headphones

One of the benefits of being a huge music fan, and writing here at GeekDad, is getting to review a lot of great independent music and the tools used to enjoy that music. Music is nothing without something to amplify its sound directly to your ear holes. I prefer headphones, as my ears are usually places where other people don’t want to hear what I’m listening to. My latest review set is the Skullcandy Hesh 2 headphones.
Read More...Like many Skullcandy offerings, the Hesh 2 headphones come in a variety of color combinations. I’m simple, so I opted for the black (even though I do have the Jamaican color scheme earbuds, just ’cause I like the flat cable). I immediately liked the leather touch ear pillows and strong, sturdy construction. They are adjustable for head size of course, and come with a little carry pouch that offers no real protection.
When it comes down to evaluating headphones though, it’s all about the music. I mean, the look and feel of the headphones on your head is important of course, and the Hesh 2 headphones are lightweight and fit pretty snug without crushing your ears. That’s a definite plus. Once that physical stuff was out of the way, it was time to break out the tunes.
Here’s my pressure test playlist for this particular pair of headphones, song by song. I’ve found that the best way to test out headphones, especially over the ear ones is to just pick a bunch of different music and jam on. That’s right, I said jam on.
Starting off with “Lies Greed Misery” off the new Linkin Park album Living Things I immediately noticed that I needed to increase the volume over what I had it set for my current in-ear headphones. I’d say a good 10% increase over current volume levels. Now I have custom equalizer settings, but there are certain generalities you can pick out in music to properly evaluate a pair of headphones. The screaming lyrics in this song are perfect to check out the vocal highs, to determine if there is any distortion at this level.
There was no distortion at this level. I really liked the way that this song felt in the Hesh 2 headphones. There is a lot going on in this track, and you could get the driving guitars behind the screaming without it being overwhelming or indiscernible. On a side note, this new Linkin Park album is probably the best Linkin Park album since their first one. I’m not a huge fan, but I’m liking this album.
Next up I put on some Maroon 5 — just kidding. I needed some bass and the most bass-filled track that has become my go-to song for headphone reviews is “R2D2″ by Service Lab off their R2D2 EP. I was a little disappointed by the bass levels here. The bass was clean, but I could tell wasn’t coming through with all its intensity. I held my hands to the headphones, squeezing them to my head and the bass increased and then I was impressed as it was really sharp and didn’t distort anything. And this difference just might be caused by my head and glasses, rather than how the headphones sit because we’re talking about an 1/8th of an inch difference in pressure.
Then the room got really loud and started to spin. I needed something a bit more… chill. Fiona Apple has a new album out and of course I have it, so “Every Single Night” off The Idler Wheel… seemed like a good test track for that quiet time music. Her new album is a very minimalist effort, tons of tiny sounds instead of large sounds outside her voice. The Hesh 2 headphones did a good job of picking up some of the tiny sounds that I missed with my in-ear headphones. Such as something in the background that sounds like a Ziploc bag full of beans being shaken.
Next up, I needed someone with a loud voice and some heavy metal guitars. Michael Poulsen of Volbeat is perfect for the deep voice test. Falling into about 10 different genres of rock music, I put on the album Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood to get a good range. On the song “Still Counting” you could definitely hear Poulsen over the music, which is the point of the beginning of the song. Then the guitars kick in on the bridge and I was suddenly headbanging at my desk.
Finally, I went to my go-to track for headphone evaluation. That would be BT’s “Suddenly” off his modern electronic classical masterpiece These Hopeful Machines. While his latest albums offer some interesting transitions, they don’t represent a wide enough audience. “Suddenly” has all those little interesting quirks that makes BT’s music enjoyable, as well as unique. With its range of bass, stutter-edit and transitions, it makes for a great headphone review track.
So I took off my glasses, closed that 1/8th of an inch with my hands and melted away. The Skullcandy Hesh 2 headphones pulled me away from the depressing realization of life in a cubicle, and the music running through my skull gave me hope for the future. How’s that for romantic? Overall, with this last song, all the elements came together and well, you really can’t go wrong with the Hesh 2 headphones at this price point.
The Hesh 2 headphones sound just as good, if not better than some more expensive headphones I’ve reviewed. They are much lighter than more expensive pairs, and I still laud Skullcandy for their attention to the tensile strength of the cable coming out of the headphone. The nice thing on these headphones is that the cable is not fixed to the ear piece. So any standard 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack will work.
There are no batteries to replace, or having to plug in the headphones to charge (which I can’t stand doing with other headphones) so that means they are completely powered by the device they are plugged into which of course comes with some pros and cons. The pros being you never have to charge them or worry about batteries and don’t have to suffer the extra weight of one. The con being that the device they are plugged into might drain power more quickly. The sound quality doesn’t seem to be something that is affected by no internal battery.
Overall, the Skullcandy Hesh 2 headphones are a great buy for the money. They retail for $60, $70 if you want a pair with a microphone (not reviewed). Considering how much people pay for other headphones that have a popular beat sounding name but are nowhere near the best headphones on the market, that’s a very fair price for a pair that requires no internal battery but sounds like they are powered by one.
Skullcandy has quickly become one of my most reliable and sturdy manufacturers of headphones, and when combined with a consistent sound offering in their product line, I have true love for this brand. I currently own no less than three pairs of Skullcandy headphones, and that’s only cause I had one pair stolen out of my car. While I don’t prefer over the ear headphones, the Hesh 2 is a nice set, with great sound at a very reasonable price.

Long story short, I really like Skullcandy’s latest pair of over-ear mid-range headphones, the Hesh.
But do I love them?
Skullcandy has been revamping its roster over the past year, including re-engineering their popular over-ear mid-range headphones. They promise “attacking bass, natural voice, and precision highs.”
Where voice and highs are concerned, Skullcandy nailed it. But “attacking bass” is an overstatement. There’s no true thud, no tangible feeling that comes along with the bass on these things. Just a low note, like any other low note.
Truth be told, I don’t feel transported to a higher plane of audio ecstasy with these things on my head, but sound quality isn’t bad by any means. I’ve been running around with an older set of Bose over-the-ears for the past few weeks and it’s hard to compete with those noise-cancelling beasts. When I put the Bose cans over my ears, all the excess sound instantly disappears. I’m in my own little suction cup of silence, until I turn on the tunes, at which point I can feel the bass buzzing through my brain.
On the other hand, the Hesh headphones are certainly loud enough for just about any setting, including a subway platform, but passersby won’t have any line of defense from your tune choices. I made the mistake of listening to “Superman” by Eminem on the crowded elevator in AOL HQ this morning at full volume — I’m sure I’m only more popular now.
I don’t get the same kind of satisfaction from the Skullcandy Hesh as I do with my Bose cans, but I also don’t pay as much. The Skullcandy Hesh headphones only cost $69.99 with a mic, and $59.99 without, as opposed to the $250+ set of Bose. That said, sound quality is perfectly acceptable at this price point.
Comfort-wise, I’m pretty pleased. I wish the headphones cupped my ears a bit more tightly — feels like there is a little pocket of space that sound escapes through. The leather pillow cups are nice, weight isn’t an issue at 180g, and the soft-touch headband is properly flexible.

The original Skullcandy Hesh represented a revolution in headphone marketing — one I’m sure Skullcandy’s competitors wish they’d thought of.
Read More...When I checked the website, the Hesh was available in 24 different cosmetic schemes, some super-hip, some sports-related, some just garish. But while the Hesh’s sound has won acclaim from consumers who leave comments like “BLOWS YOUR SKULL OFF” on the company’s website, discerning listeners I know thought the Hesh sounded muffled and overly bassy.
With the hiring of Dr. Tetsuro Oishi — an extremely knowledgeable scientist fresh off a gig at Bose — as its new director of electrical and acoustic engineering, Skullcandy seems to be getting serious about sound. The Hesh 2.0 is Tet’s first major effort, an attempt to refine the sound of the headphone without losing the love of those who write their user reviews with the caps lock on.
Like the original Hesh, the 2.0 (which at press time wasn’t yet up on the company’s website) has a somewhat bulky, plasticky look, but it’s a sleeker design. It’s the only headphone in this test that’s an over-ear, as opposed to on-ear, design, so it’s likely to give you better isolation from external noise. The detachable cable has 3.5mm plugs on both ends so it’s easy to replace. An inline mic will cost you an extra $10.
The ear cups tilt slightly up and down for better fit, but I found myself wishing they swiveled in every direction; I noted a little bit of leakage around the sides of the pads. Lauren noted when she moved the earpieces around her ears to adjust the fit that the pads made a loud, annoying crinkling sound when she released them.
The Hesh 2.0’s sound earned both raves and pans from the panel. Joe ranked it #1, Lauren ranked it #6, and Howard and I put it in the middle.
The 2.0 retains the bass-heavy balance of its predecessor — Howard and Lauren noted a boomy resonance in the bottom end, which made the bass sound sloppy. However, based on my memory of the original Hesh, the 2.0’s mids are much clearer. In fact, I’d rank its fidelity with voices at least the equal any headphone in this test. The powerful bass did seem to have the subjective effect of dulling the highs somewhat, reducing the apparent treble detail, but to some ears the sound is definitely appealing: “It made music sound the way I wanted it to,” Joe said.
The Hesh 2.0’s tonal balance didn’t work for most of the music I listen to, but when I put on Mötley Crüe’s “Kickstart My Heart” and The Cult’s “King Contrary Man,” the 2.0 outclassed all the other headphones we tested, with a lot more dynamics and drive, and a big, exciting sound.
Measurements: The Hesh 2.0’s frequency response is definitely tilted toward the bass and lower midrange; treble response rolls off pretty fast above 2 kHz. Adding 70 ohms output impedance to the V-Can’s 5 ohms to simulate the effects of using a low-quality amplifier had only a mild effect, boosting bass by +1 to +1.5 dB below 60 Hz. Total harmonic distortion (THD) is rather high, hitting 7% at 20 Hz at 80 dBA and really spiking below 45 Hz at 100 dBA. (I know the measurement looks weird, but I repeated it several times and double-checked my calibration, and I did this measurement at the same time and with the same method as all the others.) Impedance is close to flat, averaging 35 ohms. Isolation is just OK, maybe a tad below average for an over-ear, measuring -10 to -25 dB above 1.3 kHz. Average sensitivity from 300 Hz to 10 kHz with a 1 mW signal at the rated 35 ohms impedance is 99.4 dB.
Bottom Line: For heavy rock and hip-hop, the Hesh’s balance seems perfect. If that’s the kind of music you dig, you’ll probably love the Hesh 2.0 — and it’s a sure thing Skullcandy will offer it with graphics that suit your style as much as the sound suits your taste.

Amazing Headphones for music fans of all kinds

I bought these headphones about 6 months ago and I've been loving them ever since. I needed something to with good enough sound quality to help judge all the beats that people put into their music and to help me find spots where some improvements could be made, but I also needed something that wouldn't destroy my bank account. These headphones delivered on both fronts. They have amazing sound quality, great range, and a price that is well worth it when compared to similar quality by other brands. The only complaint I have is that the cushions do irritate your skin if you have them on for too long, and by that I mean the 5-10 hours a day that I usually have them on for.

I just got these and I love them already. I'm using them mainly on a custom built gaming PC with audio off of an ASUS P8Z77 Pro Thunderbolt motherboard. The combination of the custom audio settings in the ASUS software and the comfort of the headphones is stellar!

I use these primarily at home, and they have been pretty comfortable thus far, also, the 1/8" jack is a male/male cable that plugs into the headphone itself, so if you have a longer cable, or it shorts out, it's easily replaceable. That's pretty fantastic. The downside is that these start to bleed sound at a pretty low volume. They do a decent job of keeping noise out, but everyone around you will know what you're listening to if you turn it up more than halfway. Plus, these puppies aren't very loud in general. I plugged them into my computer and turned it up full volume, and it was incredibly bearable. Based on comfort and sound quality, I'd recommend them. Just don't use them on public transit.

I own a pair of Hesh and Hesh 2, and you can definitely tell the difference. The quality of the Hesh 2 is so much clearer, vocals are better and you have a feeling of the sound surrounding you. I think the bass is better in these than my old pair.

The Skullcandy Hesh are comfortable, affordable, heavy-duty durable, and have amazing sound quality. If you are a DJ and are looking for headphones that have great noise isolation, you should consider buying the Skullcandy Hesh 2. The only thing that I think should be fixed is, to make them a little bit tighter around the ears. You feel as like if there is a space in between your ear and the headphones. Overall, these headphones are Studio quality and are definitely worth the buy. I very much recommend getting the Hesh 2 from Skullcandy.

I got these headphones for Christmas in 2012, I honestly really enjoy them, and I am a HUGE Skullcandy fan, however, they don't get as loud, nor seem to have as much bass as the first Hesh Headphones, though the sound is much clearer, and crisp. I do recommend them to everyone I meet and do enjoy having them being a music fanatic! Very worth the price!

Okay, so I have been looking for a good set of over-ear headphones for a long time now. I finally came to the conclusion to purchase these. And let me tell you it was a great buy! These headphones are just amazing. There sound quality is great and for the price its just perfect. For me they are pretty comfortable. Some people say to hurts after a while but it doesn't hurt at all. I can seriously wear them all day. They are also pretty sturdy. Had them for about 2 months or more, and they sound the same as I first used it. It has a great look to it too. Overall they are exellent headphones.

For the price of this headset you get your moneys worth. The sound quality: AMAZING. Comfort: I feel that i can where my Heshs for for a very long (2-2&1/2 hours) before i start feel discomfort. One other thing I like personally is that when im listening to music that has heavy base or in a rock song with heavy drums and guitar and you just zone out for a while you feel as if your right next to the band. Also i have accidentally dropped my headphones from at least 7 feet and they still work perfectly.

I just got these literally about 10 minutes ago. I've been listening to them ever since! Brought them into school and already received many different compliments on them! The sound is very good too! When I first opened the box, I was amazed by the quality of the headphones. I started listening to music, a huge improvement from my Sony MDR's. Although the listening experience was great, my ears hurt. I had to take them off for a while because it just hurt way to much. Otherwise, comfort is great.

I got these four days ago. I really wanted to get some over ear headphones I was thinking of getting soul republics but i have been a costumer of skullcandy for a long time and skull candy has life time warranty. well when i got them the box was kinda beat up ( but the product was fine) well when i first started to listing to them they were really good but what i noticed is it sounds like the base of the inkd2 Is better then the hesh 2.0( I was kinda hoping that the hesh was going to have really good base but the inkd beat it (I mean it has good base just not like inkd ) I think im going to get some aviators when these break.

I love the bass on the Hesh 2's, Isn't to much bass like the old ones, they a bit softer then the previews HESH, But sound is distributed equal. Keep up the good work. When you set the sound full it's still clear. I Love the fact that you can unplug the power cable. I'm a big fan of skullcandy i even, have the Rasta Ear buds.

I have had the Hesh 2 headphones for, lets say, a year, and they do NOT disappoint. The sound quality is flawless (to me, at least), and they are very comfortable. I have dropped them countless times, and there is literally not even a scratch. The headphones, if not plugged in fully, cut in and out, but I don't think it happens very much, that people don't plug the cord in all the way, so this is not a concern. Also, after wearing for multiple hours straight, they start to get uncomfortable, but I feel like I wear headphones as long as humanly possible at one time, so this is also not a concern. The headphones are extremely comfortable before the umpteenth hour straight wearing them. Like, really comfortable. In conclusion, I think the only thing I don't like is that Skullcandy didn't give my a star number 6 for "Extra Credit" Yeah, they're that good. Go to the store and buy these headphones. Stop debating.

The Hesh 2 headphones have many things going for them. Unfortunately, sound quality is not one of them. I recently purchased a pair and have a few issues. While you can hear some of the mid-range and treble frequencies coming through, they seem to be muted. I'm wondering if this is a result of the (seemingly exaggerated) bass which does not disappoint. I have been an audiophile for 30 years so I know what the music I listen to should sound like. Sadly the Hesh 2 headphones are not quite there. People following today's trends such as Dub-Step and Hip-Hop are primarily concerned with how deep the bass sounds. This is fine but headphone manufacturers should not manufacture headphones that simply reproduce that exaggerated bass at the expense of the higher frequencies. Others rate these headphones as great because they are only concerned with the bass. This is too bad because they miss so much otherwise. My other complaint about the Hesh 2 headphones is that they are not quite loud enough. Stop worrying about people being irresponsible and damaging their hearing and let those of us who want to turn them up. On the plus side, these headphones are very comfortable for extended wear and the noise dampening is nice too. Too many times I've been interrupted when listening to headphones by people asking me to turn my music down because the sound is disturbing them. I have not experienced this problem with the Hesh 2 headphones. Overall the Hesh 2 headphones are pretty good but they are not yet good enough.

Overall, these phones are pretty awesome. Although the comfort isn't that good with no padding on the headband, the quality of the sound is alright. The bass is extraordinary! I'd say the bass is better then Dr. Dre Beats.

Ive had these headphones since Christmas ( I got them as a gift ) and I absolutely love them. Sound quality wise, these are comparable to Beats by Dre Studios, which are 4x the price. I have had them for a full year and just now my right ear cup broke. It randomly stopped working. R.I.P. HEsh 2. Otherwise these are FANTASTIC headphones and really recomend them.

These were the first over ear headphones i have ever owned. I have had them for just under a year, and the sound is great. I am a really big fan of Skullcandy's Supreme Sound system, and would argue that it is even better than Beats by Dre or Sennheisers. While the sound is awesome, they are not comfortable at all. I like listening to music for a long period of time, and with these cans, they get uncomfortable after 20-30 minutes of use. I am a glasses wearer, and the wide ear cups press my glasses strongly into the side of my head, and this gets very uncomfortable. Also, there is no padding of any sort on the flimsy feeling headband. It digs into the top of your head. Putting a hat on underneath them helps, but it s makes a) The headphones looked stretched out and b) you look like a pretentious tool. These are very good for sound, but lack comfort. I am going to be buying Aviators soon, and will do a review on those.

the hesh 2 are amazing. they have great booming bass that does not over power the vocals and they are at a great price. they only con for me is the left ear were the plug pluds in is that it makes cracking noises depending if the song has bas or it doesnt. other than that ive been listening to a bunch of skrillex and bass nector and zomboy ect. at full volume and they sound amazing!!! they havnt burnt out yet and i love them!!!

There are many good things about these headphones. The sound quality is great. For all the music that I listen to, it delivers absolutely great sound quality. At first, I was just a tiny bit disappointed at the bass quality, but got used to it. Then, I played around with the EQ on my iPod and now the bass is where I want it to be. The design on these is also very good. I've had these for a long time now (possibly a year) and still look relatively new. The comfort levels for these are very high, but they start to get sore on your ears after awhile. These are good to use up to about maybe 30 minutes of listening. A good range for using these would be about 30- (possibly) 45 minutes at a time. Other than the minor discomfort levels, I would absolutely say that these are some of the most high quality headphones you can get around. Well done, Skullcandy.

I just received my black on black hesh2. When I first started to listen to them they weren't very lively due to lacking bass and lower notes. The sound wasn't very rich... Until I used an equalizer. I have an android and the the equalizer bars resemble a V and it helps them reach their potential. I haven't had burn out time on them , so until then, I'll keep using the EQ. But they sound beautiful. ..

Construction and material is really second to none. Phones feel solid but light enough you can forget they're there from time to time. Sound quality is great listening to a wide variety of music types - pop/rock/techno. My use of the Hesh2 borderlines on extreme, >5hrs a day 2-3x/week, in the last hour or so I find myself giving my ears a break every few songs.

Everything about these headphones are amazing! The only thing I disagree with is the size of the ears. When you lean against something, your ears hurt after a while! Other than that these headphones are amazing! They're bass is pounding at an amazing level and they're really good for dubstep, pop, rock and anything that has a good bass! These are really good headphones with amazing sound and quality but they could use more bass. I've noticed that these headphones pick up higher levels of bass but they still need to be turned up kinda high to get a pounding feeling. So basically they just need better performance in the lower ranges. Otherwise these are amazing!

The hesh 2 are awesome and better then the beats studio in highs mids and bass wise. The design it really amazing with leather padding and a matte finish which I prefer over the glossy finish, the highs mids are good but the one thing that they left out was a little more bass. It's all right but could of added a little more bass but, the incredible mids and crisp highs make up for the bass. Better than most of the beats for 200 up vs. hesh 2 for 80 bucks that have better quality, design and sound. I highly recommend these vs the beats.

I have owned a pair Hesh 2s for a few months now, and i love the sound. For this price it would be hard to find another pair of headphones with sound this amazing. I have only 2 gripes with the headphones. One is that it isn't that comfortable. It feels slightly loose on my head sometimes and i can't listen to music for hours without it start get irritating. My second complaint is that it does a poor job of blocking out sound. If no music is playing, i can hear almost every conversation i could hear with the headphones off. In conclusion, if you are a person who uses headphones just to listen to music every once in a while and you don't care for noise isolation, then this is the perfect pair of headphones you.

I am by no means an expert but here's my opinion. I used to have a pair of Bose ( I think A2). I honestly think these rival these, especially for the majority of people who rip songs at less than 320kbps. The value is awesome, and they're very comfy. The only thing I might notice is that I might like other headphones a little better for hip hop but everything else seems good. And honestly it might just be in my head...

I saw the other reviews and thought 'these are the ones i want'. They are a HUGE improvement from my *awesome* apple earbuds. they are also a lot more comfortable than headphones other headphones I've owned, and also the sound is a lot better. It has a very clear sound and i can finally understand some song lyrics i was never able to understand with previous headphones I've owned. They also look a lot cooler! :)

Ask my parents for a pair of Beats headphones for christmas and they got my these instead. I was bummed at first because id already had a pair of Panasonic knock-offs and they stunk. anyways, i plugged them into my Zune (Microsoft's knock-off of the iPod) and they sounded crystal clear. No burn-in, no doing this and that to get them warmed up, perfectly clear with the first song...they're great!

i bought these headphones yesterday after i had been looking around a few days for them (they were out of stock everywhere). when i finally got home and plugged them into my iPod the sound came blasting out of the left speaker so i took them off immediately. I tried them on again at a low volume. At first i couldnt hear the song; i had to press the cord of the headphone into the headphone to hear and the song sounded like it was far away. I unplugged them then plugged them back in and they sounded awesome (i hope thats how they usually sound). I woke up the next morning and the sound only came out of one ear and it sounded far away.Going to take them back today hopefully for a non-defective pair. I hope they sound like they should. I think i just got a defective pair.

I got the Carbon/Red as a Christmas present this year and I was STOKED to try them out. This is my first pair of non-bud phones from Skullcandy. Unfortunately when I went to test them out the music was scratchy and rattling. I tested them on my phone, iPod, and laptop with the same results. Even with the max volume on I could still barely hear the music. These phones are super comfortable and look even more amazing in person. I'll be sending them back and ordering the same ones. Hopefully theses live up to the reviews I've gotten!

Ive never been one to go out and buy a pair of Bose or some other big brand speaker company's headphones cause it didnt seem worth it at all. Now i fell in love with skullcandy years ago after winning a pair in a ski competition and i think ive owned 10 pairs or so of the various types of head phones ever since, and the reason i fell in love was the superior sound quality compared to what i was used to, and the price was great. But i could definitely tell when i demoed a pair of bose at like best buy or something that i didnt have the best sounding speakers on the market, but i always looked at the price difference and i was still on the side of skullcandy. then i decided i was going to purchase these when i saw them released and when i first got them, they never came off my head the whole day. the quality blew me away. the comfort level, frequency response of the speakers, and the overall feel of the headphones was astonishing. I listened to old songs that i thought i was sick of but i found myself liking it all over again due to the quality of the headphones. now i thought that feeling of obsessiveness would leave after the first day and i would simply get tired or bored or it and they would just be normal headphones again. this wasnt true in the least bit. I've used them for 6 hours a day on average, and no exaggerating, ive fallen asleep with them on and woke up in the night with my music still playing. these are truely incredible headphones and i would recommend these to dr dre himself, thats how much i like these.

Theses headphones are amazing. They are over-ear headphones, so your ears fit "inside" of the cans. The sound is superb. The bass isn't "thick and creamy," but it is still there and if you hold the headphones, you can hear them vibrating. The vocals are crisp and clean. It hits the highs, mids, and lows perfectly. If you are upgrading from in-ear headphones, then this will be like heaven for you. I had a problem with the headphones having a minute gap in the front between my head and the headphones, so a little sound leaks out, and you don't the full range of sound these wonderful headphones have to offer. If you hold the headphones to your head and form a complete seal, they will completely blow you away. Sound leakage is very minimal, but still leaks some sound. They are comfortable except for the headband hurt my head after an hour or so of listening, but I got used to it and no longer have this problem. They look a bit ridiculous on your head, with two semi-circles sticking out of your head. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so you might not find this to be a problem. If you're looking for a pair of great sounding headphones for low cost, you've found the right pair.

Just received my Hesh 2's. Really pleased with the sound. Read Reviews about the lack of Bass, not for me, solid Bass. I am not an audiophile, and have only used the ear bud type of headphones. I also read reviews about the lack of padding on the top of the head band, but only a few of them have no padding (you can see the difference in the pictures on line). I had a pair of the B*** $300+ noise canceling headphones, had to return them. I liked the noise canceling feature but with these Hesh 2's you don't need it, the passive canceling works well, and once you start the music you don't notice the ambient noise. Love the sound. These are a great value for the sound you get from them. I am looking forward to my next pair from Skullcandy.com, think it is going to be the Cassette style, for travel.

i am a skullcandy user from a loong time.. used the skullcandy titans for like a year now and they still work perfectly beautiful bass and everything in them.. when i went to get a over ear headphone i was gonna go for aviators but unfortunately i was short of money.. i have used a beats studio HD which one of my friends have and honestly, it aint worth all that cash.. finally i got the paul frank hesh 2.. at first the one with the mic didnt support my xperia arc s so i was kinda dissapointed but then i tried the one without the mic and it worked perfectly.. TOTALLY in love with my new hesh 2!! totally worth the money and wayyy better than the beats :D i highly recommend these to anyone.. hats off to skullcandy :) YOU GUYS FRIKKIN RULE! :D

I got the Hesh 2.0 after owning ink'd buds and 50/50s. The ink'd buds were cool, I liked how the canceled some noise but they broke after a while. The 50/50s were even better, they truly did have ballistic bass. And then I got Hesh 2.0 I really wanted some aviators so when I got these It was kinda a let down... And then I listened to some music through them... I started hearing new things in my music I'd never heard before. Supreme sound is no understatement! They have a very "full" "deep" sound I recommend them! I tested them against Bose Quiet Comfort 15 active noise canceling headphones and, other than a difference in noise canceling abilities (Bose wins) the SK Hesh 2.0 had a fuller deeper sound.

I really like the looks of these. There's a Skullcandy logo on both sides of the cord, as well as on both sides of the headphones. The headband feels very sturdy and the cushions are nice and soft. Although it does get a bit sweaty when for example you're dancing. They don't absord sweat very well.

I bought these from Radioshack since they're cheaper at that store than they are online, but if I had known how good these sound and how comfortable they are, I definitely would've payed the original price! I used them to work out today and I felt no discomfort after my hour long work out,or during it! I also like that they dont squeeze your head like most "around ear" headphones do! Just got my Hesh 2 Carbon reds yesterday and so far I love them. I had a pair of the first Hesh headphones and they broke, but SkullCandy was kind enough to issue a full refund, allowing me to afford the Hesh 2s. The difference in the Hesh 2 and Hesh 1 is remarkable. They are so much more comfortable and the sound is fantastic. I can here bits of music that I didn't even know was there. I love the clean design with the matte finish and the detachable cord is a huge bonus for me because I work in a computer lab with others so now there is no worry of accidentally unplugging from the computer and blasting my music to the whole room. Overall I am very pleased.

I got this cause i broke my other pair (warranty is awesome) but the carbon/red are comfortable, the sound is good if not great, unless the bass is really heavy then it is just good to fair but besides that very good. now you can still use them on dub step. house, ect, but the bass is not there like head crushers but still good for it. Now the mic/ button are hard to get used to for my evo, but comes in handy when i am using the cord as an audio jack for my car when i am going threw the drive threw just push the button and "bam" paused push again "bang" music is there. But yea to the point i love them. :D

I wanted Dr Dre Headphones, but these are better! I love the looks, and overall design. Just that the earcups are pretty big. The sound is amazing, and can cancel 75% of noise. I love these headphones, with great highs, lows and mids. These are pretty much Dr Dre's headphones but better, everyone, stop comparing these to Dr Dre's, because these CRUSH them!!

Got these from Best Buy. Great sound for anyone up for casual music. It however does not favor anyone with short, bald, or weaves hair as it lacks cushion. Sound will crack to strong bass, and its plastics will likely outshine the circuits in durability. I recommend this for a highschooler or someone in need of good quality headphones. Metal headphones are better if your looking to get more bass than this.

When I tried these out at a Best Buy in the US, I was impressed by how much the Hesh 2.0 has been changed from the original. With it's brand new look, design, and build, it certainly is a step up in terms of style. Soundwise the Hesh 2.0 also sounds pretty good, even if the vocals aren't clear enough over the mids and highs. Adding on to that, is that the headphones themselves don't have quite the tightest fit on the ears. However, this is still a great headphone that I would recommend.

Just received these as a gift. Sadly, returning them ASAP. I am a SC fan and have bought and used various earphones from these guys. However these HESH are poor. No bass, very tinny, not very loud, not that comfortable, short cord... The list goes on. Tested them with different types of music, which made no difference. Either mine are faulty, or these are just terrible headphones. Very disappointed.

First off i was never a big fan of skullcandy but i have to give them major props on the Hesh 2.0s. When i first put them on i was amazed at the crispness of the highs,followed by the amount of bass these things can put out. Once i got them burned in the sound was even more spectacular! i own a pair of beats studios and i have to say that these headphones certainly blow them out of the water...and for $60 i dare you to find a more well rounded pair of headphones. these are perfect for just about any genre of music, especially dubstep. so if your a money conscious person look no further cause these are the ones for you.

When my friend first bought me thess headphones I really enjoyed them. They handled bass for a good average amount of time. About six months later they gave in. The right can blew out. About a week of continued listening the left can blew out too. About another two weeks after that the right ear wouldn't even play. About one more week from that, the left ear is now kicking on and off. I know that the reason for the headphones not playing through the right ear is because of the cord. These headphones still worked pretty well being blown out but when it comes to bass and heavy dubstep/deathstep it sounds like horrible. I find that the HESH styles only last about six months then brake down. Last year I had HESH v.1 and the cord was horrible and the ear padding wasn't that comfortable. Shortly after the HESH v.1 broke I went and bought HESH v.2 and these were a ton better. The sound quality was amazing, the ear pads were very comfortable, and the cord is an easy fix. I would recommend these for temporary use for good sound quality only. I plan on getting the Mix Masters here within the next two months. I really can't wait to try the Mix Masters. :p But just note: I listen to my music every day. I am a huge music fan. Most of my music that I listen to using these headphones are: Dubstep, Grindcore, Deathcore, Deathmetal, Deathstep, ect.

Hesh 2: Supreme Sound and Price with Skullcandy Hesh 2 Headphones

One of the benefits of being a huge music fan, and writing here at GeekDad, is getting to review a lot of great independent music and the tools used to enjoy that music. Music is nothing without something to amplify its sound directly to your ear holes. I prefer headphones, as my ears are usually places where other people don’t want to hear what I’m listening to. My latest review set is the Skullcandy Hesh 2 headphones.
Read More...Like many Skullcandy offerings, the Hesh 2 headphones come in a variety of color combinations. I’m simple, so I opted for the black (even though I do have the Jamaican color scheme earbuds, just ’cause I like the flat cable). I immediately liked the leather touch ear pillows and strong, sturdy construction. They are adjustable for head size of course, and come with a little carry pouch that offers no real protection.
When it comes down to evaluating headphones though, it’s all about the music. I mean, the look and feel of the headphones on your head is important of course, and the Hesh 2 headphones are lightweight and fit pretty snug without crushing your ears. That’s a definite plus. Once that physical stuff was out of the way, it was time to break out the tunes.
Here’s my pressure test playlist for this particular pair of headphones, song by song. I’ve found that the best way to test out headphones, especially over the ear ones is to just pick a bunch of different music and jam on. That’s right, I said jam on.
Starting off with “Lies Greed Misery” off the new Linkin Park album Living Things I immediately noticed that I needed to increase the volume over what I had it set for my current in-ear headphones. I’d say a good 10% increase over current volume levels. Now I have custom equalizer settings, but there are certain generalities you can pick out in music to properly evaluate a pair of headphones. The screaming lyrics in this song are perfect to check out the vocal highs, to determine if there is any distortion at this level.
There was no distortion at this level. I really liked the way that this song felt in the Hesh 2 headphones. There is a lot going on in this track, and you could get the driving guitars behind the screaming without it being overwhelming or indiscernible. On a side note, this new Linkin Park album is probably the best Linkin Park album since their first one. I’m not a huge fan, but I’m liking this album.
Next up I put on some Maroon 5 — just kidding. I needed some bass and the most bass-filled track that has become my go-to song for headphone reviews is “R2D2″ by Service Lab off their R2D2 EP. I was a little disappointed by the bass levels here. The bass was clean, but I could tell wasn’t coming through with all its intensity. I held my hands to the headphones, squeezing them to my head and the bass increased and then I was impressed as it was really sharp and didn’t distort anything. And this difference just might be caused by my head and glasses, rather than how the headphones sit because we’re talking about an 1/8th of an inch difference in pressure.
Then the room got really loud and started to spin. I needed something a bit more… chill. Fiona Apple has a new album out and of course I have it, so “Every Single Night” off The Idler Wheel… seemed like a good test track for that quiet time music. Her new album is a very minimalist effort, tons of tiny sounds instead of large sounds outside her voice. The Hesh 2 headphones did a good job of picking up some of the tiny sounds that I missed with my in-ear headphones. Such as something in the background that sounds like a Ziploc bag full of beans being shaken.
Next up, I needed someone with a loud voice and some heavy metal guitars. Michael Poulsen of Volbeat is perfect for the deep voice test. Falling into about 10 different genres of rock music, I put on the album Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood to get a good range. On the song “Still Counting” you could definitely hear Poulsen over the music, which is the point of the beginning of the song. Then the guitars kick in on the bridge and I was suddenly headbanging at my desk.
Finally, I went to my go-to track for headphone evaluation. That would be BT’s “Suddenly” off his modern electronic classical masterpiece These Hopeful Machines. While his latest albums offer some interesting transitions, they don’t represent a wide enough audience. “Suddenly” has all those little interesting quirks that makes BT’s music enjoyable, as well as unique. With its range of bass, stutter-edit and transitions, it makes for a great headphone review track.
So I took off my glasses, closed that 1/8th of an inch with my hands and melted away. The Skullcandy Hesh 2 headphones pulled me away from the depressing realization of life in a cubicle, and the music running through my skull gave me hope for the future. How’s that for romantic? Overall, with this last song, all the elements came together and well, you really can’t go wrong with the Hesh 2 headphones at this price point.
The Hesh 2 headphones sound just as good, if not better than some more expensive headphones I’ve reviewed. They are much lighter than more expensive pairs, and I still laud Skullcandy for their attention to the tensile strength of the cable coming out of the headphone. The nice thing on these headphones is that the cable is not fixed to the ear piece. So any standard 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack will work.
There are no batteries to replace, or having to plug in the headphones to charge (which I can’t stand doing with other headphones) so that means they are completely powered by the device they are plugged into which of course comes with some pros and cons. The pros being you never have to charge them or worry about batteries and don’t have to suffer the extra weight of one. The con being that the device they are plugged into might drain power more quickly. The sound quality doesn’t seem to be something that is affected by no internal battery.
Overall, the Skullcandy Hesh 2 headphones are a great buy for the money. They retail for $60, $70 if you want a pair with a microphone (not reviewed). Considering how much people pay for other headphones that have a popular beat sounding name but are nowhere near the best headphones on the market, that’s a very fair price for a pair that requires no internal battery but sounds like they are powered by one.
Skullcandy has quickly become one of my most reliable and sturdy manufacturers of headphones, and when combined with a consistent sound offering in their product line, I have true love for this brand. I currently own no less than three pairs of Skullcandy headphones, and that’s only cause I had one pair stolen out of my car. While I don’t prefer over the ear headphones, the Hesh 2 is a nice set, with great sound at a very reasonable price.

Long story short, I really like Skullcandy’s latest pair of over-ear mid-range headphones, the Hesh.
But do I love them?
Skullcandy has been revamping its roster over the past year, including re-engineering their popular over-ear mid-range headphones. They promise “attacking bass, natural voice, and precision highs.”
Where voice and highs are concerned, Skullcandy nailed it. But “attacking bass” is an overstatement. There’s no true thud, no tangible feeling that comes along with the bass on these things. Just a low note, like any other low note.
Truth be told, I don’t feel transported to a higher plane of audio ecstasy with these things on my head, but sound quality isn’t bad by any means. I’ve been running around with an older set of Bose over-the-ears for the past few weeks and it’s hard to compete with those noise-cancelling beasts. When I put the Bose cans over my ears, all the excess sound instantly disappears. I’m in my own little suction cup of silence, until I turn on the tunes, at which point I can feel the bass buzzing through my brain.
On the other hand, the Hesh headphones are certainly loud enough for just about any setting, including a subway platform, but passersby won’t have any line of defense from your tune choices. I made the mistake of listening to “Superman” by Eminem on the crowded elevator in AOL HQ this morning at full volume — I’m sure I’m only more popular now.
I don’t get the same kind of satisfaction from the Skullcandy Hesh as I do with my Bose cans, but I also don’t pay as much. The Skullcandy Hesh headphones only cost $69.99 with a mic, and $59.99 without, as opposed to the $250+ set of Bose. That said, sound quality is perfectly acceptable at this price point.
Comfort-wise, I’m pretty pleased. I wish the headphones cupped my ears a bit more tightly — feels like there is a little pocket of space that sound escapes through. The leather pillow cups are nice, weight isn’t an issue at 180g, and the soft-touch headband is properly flexible.

Hesh 2.0- For a Song: The $59 Headphone Roundup

The original Skullcandy Hesh represented a revolution in headphone marketing — one I’m sure Skullcandy’s competitors wish they’d thought of.
Read More...When I checked the website, the Hesh was available in 24 different cosmetic schemes, some super-hip, some sports-related, some just garish. But while the Hesh’s sound has won acclaim from consumers who leave comments like “BLOWS YOUR SKULL OFF” on the company’s website, discerning listeners I know thought the Hesh sounded muffled and overly bassy.
With the hiring of Dr. Tetsuro Oishi — an extremely knowledgeable scientist fresh off a gig at Bose — as its new director of electrical and acoustic engineering, Skullcandy seems to be getting serious about sound. The Hesh 2.0 is Tet’s first major effort, an attempt to refine the sound of the headphone without losing the love of those who write their user reviews with the caps lock on.
Like the original Hesh, the 2.0 (which at press time wasn’t yet up on the company’s website) has a somewhat bulky, plasticky look, but it’s a sleeker design. It’s the only headphone in this test that’s an over-ear, as opposed to on-ear, design, so it’s likely to give you better isolation from external noise. The detachable cable has 3.5mm plugs on both ends so it’s easy to replace. An inline mic will cost you an extra $10.
The ear cups tilt slightly up and down for better fit, but I found myself wishing they swiveled in every direction; I noted a little bit of leakage around the sides of the pads. Lauren noted when she moved the earpieces around her ears to adjust the fit that the pads made a loud, annoying crinkling sound when she released them.
The Hesh 2.0’s sound earned both raves and pans from the panel. Joe ranked it #1, Lauren ranked it #6, and Howard and I put it in the middle.
The 2.0 retains the bass-heavy balance of its predecessor — Howard and Lauren noted a boomy resonance in the bottom end, which made the bass sound sloppy. However, based on my memory of the original Hesh, the 2.0’s mids are much clearer. In fact, I’d rank its fidelity with voices at least the equal any headphone in this test. The powerful bass did seem to have the subjective effect of dulling the highs somewhat, reducing the apparent treble detail, but to some ears the sound is definitely appealing: “It made music sound the way I wanted it to,” Joe said.
The Hesh 2.0’s tonal balance didn’t work for most of the music I listen to, but when I put on Mötley Crüe’s “Kickstart My Heart” and The Cult’s “King Contrary Man,” the 2.0 outclassed all the other headphones we tested, with a lot more dynamics and drive, and a big, exciting sound.
Measurements: The Hesh 2.0’s frequency response is definitely tilted toward the bass and lower midrange; treble response rolls off pretty fast above 2 kHz. Adding 70 ohms output impedance to the V-Can’s 5 ohms to simulate the effects of using a low-quality amplifier had only a mild effect, boosting bass by +1 to +1.5 dB below 60 Hz. Total harmonic distortion (THD) is rather high, hitting 7% at 20 Hz at 80 dBA and really spiking below 45 Hz at 100 dBA. (I know the measurement looks weird, but I repeated it several times and double-checked my calibration, and I did this measurement at the same time and with the same method as all the others.) Impedance is close to flat, averaging 35 ohms. Isolation is just OK, maybe a tad below average for an over-ear, measuring -10 to -25 dB above 1.3 kHz. Average sensitivity from 300 Hz to 10 kHz with a 1 mW signal at the rated 35 ohms impedance is 99.4 dB.
Bottom Line: For heavy rock and hip-hop, the Hesh’s balance seems perfect. If that’s the kind of music you dig, you’ll probably love the Hesh 2.0 — and it’s a sure thing Skullcandy will offer it with graphics that suit your style as much as the sound suits your taste.

It all depends on how loud you listen to your music. At about half way they can barely hear it if it's quiet around but about 3/4 to full they can hear it clearly. It doesn't leak sound that much though, but it isn't very good at containing the sound.Age: Under 18

I found the original Hesh to be super uncomfortable and fit really right. Is the bottom padding on the Hesh 2 more comfortable? The original Hesh made pressure points on my head I could even wear them for 5min.

It all depends on how loud you listen to your music. At about half way they can barely hear it if it's quiet around but about 3/4 to full they can hear it clearly. It doesn't leak sound that much though, but it isn't very good at containing the sound.Age: Under 18
