Fix In-Ear: The Fix From Skullcandy Is Ergonomic in Sound and Style
October 3, 2012
Publication: WIRED.COM
"While I have reviewed some great headphones over time, offerings from Phiaton, Nixon and Logitech have impressed, I always come back to one particular manufacturer of personal headphones. The latest in-ear headphones from Skullcandy, The Fix, continue to bring a strong and affordable sound delivery system to my ears."
Read More...Over time I have come to realize that with a great love of music comes a great love of music delivery devices. These days it’s not enough to just listen to music out of any old speaker or headset. I have become very particular in my device usage. While I have reviewed some great headphones over time, offerings from Phiaton, Nixon and Logitech have impressed, I always come back to one particular manufacturer of personal headphones. The latest in-ear headphones from Skullcandy, The Fix, continue to bring a strong and affordable sound delivery system to my ears.
Listen, way before I ever started reviewing headphones I was using them. From back in the Sony Walkman days. Remember those over the ear puffballs? Then, headphones got better and I took a liking to in-ear headphones, rather than the classic earbuds that kind of hang there. Companies started touting the “noise cancelling” effects of in-ear buds (which is nearly impossible, they just raised the bass output) and there were tons of them on the market. I went through numerous Sony in-ear headphones, Pioneer and so on. Then I found my first pair of Skullcandy.
One day I was at work, and realized that I had forgotten my headphones. So I drove to Target, which was closer than my house, to buy another pair. That’s how much those headphones rocked. When my MP3 player got stolen, I was more disappointed because of the flat cord Skullcandy headphones that were with it. I bought another pair, but had to settle for the rasta-colored ones because they were out of blue. Up until recently I’ve been using a pair of Skullcandy Titans, which have a fabric cord, something all manufacturers should adapt. So as you can probably guess, me reviewing another pair of Skullcandy headphones will probably end positively.
Skullcandy is billing The Fix in-ear headphones as the solution to the age old problem of headphones, especially earbuds, falling out of your ears during athletic activities. While I appreciate the nod towards assuming everyone is being physically active, this problem, I think, isn’t as roughshod as they make it out to be. There have been headphones on the market for years that stay in the ears, though those over the ear ones with earbuds can be kind of uncomfortable.
Styled similar in shape to the Phiaton Bluetooth pair I reviewed recently, Skullcandy has learned that this is the best and most ergonomic shape for in-ear headphones. You don’t see many like this on the market, with the in-ear bit at that particular angle. There is one major item I like to check before listening to any music when I get a new pair of headphones and that is construction.
For the price, around $70, they are constructed well, but could be better. The cord does have a plastic casing near the base of the headphone to protect it, but that could have been stronger. The actual earbuds are classic Skullcandy, deep and with a flimsy piece of carbon fiber keeping your over-abundance of ear wax from falling into the speaker. I’ve never liked this, and always felt that something needed to be done to secure these bits on better. I’ve never owned a pair of in-ear headphones that solved this problem.
For the record, this is probably going to be my last headphone review until the next one. Wait, what? So how do they sound? That’s the question now, isn’t it? Well, I generally have a standard slate of test tracks that I queue up, but I have some new tunes so I decided to switch it up just a bit. I started off with a mainstay, “Suddenly” by BT. The mix of highs, lows and electronic magic make for a good test of a headphone. The levels were nice, nothing too deep (as I’ve experienced with some Skullcandy headphones in the past) and the highs and minute details of the music were present.
The sound overall was very similar to the Titan, though The Fix seemed to lock in your ear in such a way that you get those minute details. Next up was some rock with good vocal range, so why not the new Muse album 2nd Law? On a side note, this is an excellent album, so go buy it now. The album kicks off with the song “Supremacy” which goes into some deep orchestration and vocal ranges. The Fix did a great job of picking all this up with no distortion or ranging out the music over the vocals.
I wanted to go lower, put in some bass. Something that would make my sub-woofer at home vibrate the neighbors house. So I switched over to one of Scrubclub’s latest artists, Service Lab. Their EP R2D2 hit the lows well. Impressive bass from The Fix on the title track here, though I pretty much expected that from Skullcandy. While their headphones haven’t always captured the highs very well, they’ve always handled the lows with supreme competence.
The real selling point of these headphones though is the shape and the ergonomic feel. They have an in-line microphone, but I don’t really use that type of feature much. Though I’m pretty sure I listen to music too loud in the car, so I might need an in-line mic on my future hearing aid. Not sure how that would work though. The Skullcandy Fix in-ear headphones also come in a billion different colors, but that’s not important. Well, it is to some people, the fashion conscious music aficionado.
WIRED Ergonomic and light, the Skullcandy Fix in-ear headphones carry great sound at a reasonable price.
TIRED The cord is still the classic rubber and you will eventually sweat through it.

Fix In-Ear: Sound Check- Battle of the In-Ear Headphones
November 17, 2011
Publication: Competitor Magazine
We’ve all been there—you’re out for a run when you’re suddenly distracted with your earbuds.
There’s nothing worse than fumbling with earbuds that won’t stay put.
Read More...Sport fitness earbuds are one of the more difficult types to find on the market. Not all earbuds are designed the same and finding the time to shop for the right pair that sound great and stay in place can be just as challenging as knowing where to start.
So, we did the shopping for you. We spoke with Pete Kelly, director of industrial design for SkullCandy, on how to shop for earbuds, and tested a few pairs from various companies to see how they measured up.
Finding the best shape and design:
Look for a form that allows the earbud to sit down inside the natural curves of the ear, which keeps it from falling out. This also positions the speaker directly in-line with the ear canal to deliver the purest sound. Lightweight injected plastics assure long-term comfort. Avoid heavy materials like metal, as it doesn’t respond well to sweat. If you wear buds under a helmet, choose a low profile bud so your ears don’t hurt.
Caring for your earbuds:
Store them in a carrying case. Avoid tightly wrapping them around your device—this will cause kinks in the cables. Also, keep an eye on the “speaker grill.” If you see wax build-up, use a q-tip and some alcohol to gently wipe it away. Clean the exterior with water.
Biggest mistakes in using earbuds:
It’s effective to route the buds under your shirt if you plan to be very active. Find a bud style, or in-ear style that fits you correctly—this will reduce the tendency for them to fall out.

Great sound, needs to be rugged

I've had some for about 8 months when the left ear went out. Skullcandy replaced them and they worked great, for about 3 months. I really love the sound they have, but since I run alot, sweat tends to get on them. If they can take more of a beating, they would be perfect. Great sound for the price.

I bought a pair the week they first came out, and I'm not gonna lie, they worked for a solid month then stopped working. But then I got a second pair, and they're just now starting to have problems. A year and a half later!!! These headphones are amazing and they're comfortable and I'm usually really hard on headphones. But like, they're almost too good, on account of that I haven't needed to buy another skullcandy product since then. So, Yeah, Highly recommended. Soooo worth it.

Used maybe 6-12 times. Took care of them very well. Had them for maybe 6 months. Right bud goes out. The wire seems WIMPY by the jack. I got these for warranty replacement for my FMJs that I loved. (could drive a car over those) I'll be trying Something else FOR SURE.

I had a pair of The Chrome FMJ's and they were nice to have and I was completely bummed out do to the price that I paid for them at the time. With Skullcandy's warranty there was no questions asked and out came the sales guy with these FIX and he stated that they are so much better then the FMJ's. I would have to agree I'm in complete shock to the sound and they stay in my ear better then the last pair that I had. They are comfy and I have had them fall out of my ears so far with the amount they are used thru out the day. I will continue to be a loyal customer with the awesome warranty compared to any of the others they your screwed once there's start having issues....

However, they star to be annoying within 2 hour of listening to music. They supply an extremely high BASS sound, while cutting an high frequencies. -> doesn't suitable for Jazz or Classic music <- but hey...after all they made for sport (active people) don't waste your time reading this and just buy them.

Best buds I have ever owned
February 19th, 2013

I bought these back in November. Since then I used then almost every day between work, gym and snowboarding. 2 weeks ago the right ear stopped working, In all fairness I was riding all day in 5 degrees. Customer Service helped me through the warrenty processes and I am just waiting on my refund to buy them again. They are super comfortable and stay in your ear no matter what. Would reccomend to anyone who is looking for a new pair, especially for skiing or snowboarding.

Never wanna use another pair of earphones
January 28th, 2013
by Enzo
I'm an avid music listener and sound quality is important to me. I considered buying the Beats in earphones until i stumbled across these one day and decided to give them a shot. i was blown away at the sound quality. after several months of using them i tried out a buddys pair of beats in ear headphones and they sounded identical to these. Bottom line im glad i picked these up and after 9 months of using and abusing them they broke and Skull Candy handled the warranty nicely and hooked me up. I recommended these to my brother and he picked up a pair and is in love with them.

So at first I was kind of on the edge about getting these because they are kind of pricey... but after lots of consideration and looking at other earbuds I decided on these. And when I got them I was amazed! These have such good soudquality. Good bass, High's Mid's and Low's, but I'd say the thing that got me the most is the comfort! I've worn them for hours and it felt like nothing was there and there were no ear aches! Good job Skullcandy, excellent ear buds!

I bought these to replace the stock iPhone headphones that had worn out. I needed something for the gym. I have never own'ed a pair of "in-ear" headphones. They do take some getting used to. At first you get anoyed that you can hear yourself chewing, drinking and swollowing. After a while you will tune that out. The bass on these is exaggerated like most Skullcandy products, but not so bad that you can't get used to it. Being a rock and metal buff excessive bass isn't what I care about in a listening device. Listeners of other genres may enjoy these better. The single biggest complaint I have about these isn't the quality of earbuds at all. The biggest issue I have with them is how hard it is to double click the center button without raising or lowering the volume. Sometimes I just have to pull the device out of my pocket and unlock it to skip tracks. This is a huge inconvienance. And the sole reason I knocked off stars on my rating. For the price this should not have been an oversight.

Want my Titans back!!
October 29th, 2012
by Scott
After my backpack was stolen with my Titan earbuds in it, I bought these. I ordered last year's model, but I don't think there'd be a huge difference between the two... Anyways, the packaging was crazy cool but when I got the buds out I was immediately let down - the wires seemed cheap and plastic-y and the buds themselves were plastic too, unlike the metal Titans. When I tried them out I was even more let down. The sound quality was a disaster! There was now bass in songs I didn't know had that much bass, the highs were muffled, no clarity, and the isolation I had with the Titans was not present at all. Also, for a product advertised to stay in your ears, they failed horribly! They would fall right out the first chance they got and were not at all comfortable to have in! (And I have 'normal' ears, no problems with the Titans or any other earplug/bud# Returning these ASAP! DON'T BUY - Skullcandy let me down this time D:

No Fall Out!
October 25th, 2012
by Justin
I bought the Fix in Ear because of the fact that I had issues with the Smokin' Buds line and the 50/50 Line regarding fitment in my ears. For some reason the ear buds kept on popping out of my ear. I opt'ed for this line and I have to say, I couldn't be happier. No earbud is perfect, but this comes very close. During regular wearing you will not have to worry about your earbuds falling out. I have had an infrequent issue with them falling out during running, but like I said, very infrequently. Thank you Skullcandy!!

If you are not satisfied with the fix, READ THIS

When i received these a few months ago, i was not happy with their fit at all. Ink'd earbuds stayed in better. After writing a negative review, I hardly used them at all. Then one day, i realized my mistake. It is IMPERATIVE that you put the earbud in it's corresponding ear (via the small lettering below the bud). I had them switched around the whole time, providing a terrible fit. The correct way to wear them may seem unnatural, but it stays in your ear like no other earbud i've tried. By reading some negative reviews, i know others have made the same mistake. Please make sure you don't make the same stupid mistake i did. These earbuds are all around winners!

I have found almost a perfect match. I had the 50/50's and the copped these for $70. If you listen to itunes you get the best quality. The acoustics are tuned to challenge Monster AKA Beats by Dr. Dre Tours and they fit just as well. The Smokin Buds were my first bud loves and know we have a knew winner that is crystal clear. The Fix. The only downfall is that even the Mic 3 is not compatible 100%. But so far everything else has cured my music"Fix". -R3GR3TT

They sound just like the Fmj's, which is amazing. They do stay in your ears very very well. They hurt your ears after 30 minutes or so, on the medium tips. The small gel tips go in a lot better and wont ever hurt for however long you wear them, but they do not seal nearly as good as the medium (losses quite a bit of bass)

SkullCandy 5EVER
August 29th, 2012
by Jake M.
I have owned SkullCandy headphones for quite a while now. They stay in my ears really well (I have to use the small buds, the medium and large ones don't fit) which I love and the sound quality is amazing. More than that is the Lifetime Warranty which is how I just got these. I live fairly local to SkullCandy's main office and they have a warranty/retail exchange store there so after filling out the online paperwork and a short drive I traded in my busted FMJs for these Fixes. At first I was concerned because they feel significantly cheaper (plastic vs metal) but then I tested them out and not only do they sound better, but looking over them they have a much better design as well (no more nylon wrap on the cord, the 3.5mm jack connector has a more secure/solid cable entry point (which is what was damaged on my FMJs after 3 years of use) and the grills inside the earbuds look a lot more secure than the old ones as well. The remote control is just a bonus. My only real complaint is that it feels like the remote should be down about 1-2 inches on the cord... it's hard to reach for it while running without looking, but I'm sure I'll get used to that so no worth taking off a star. Overall, I couldn't be happier with SkullCandy's customer service and the new Fix In-Ear buds I have.

I run frequently and love music, so when i saw these and their positive reviews, I bought a pair. I was hopeful that i had found a pair of earphones that wouldn't fall out but still had great sound. Going by the reviews, price, and description, I was expecting just that. Long story short, they didn't exactly meet up to expectations. Don't get me wrong, the sound was great, but after comparing them to my ink'd 2's, i found the ink'd pair actually stayed in much better. (Yes i tried both sizes of buds) Judging by the price difference of $50, you'd think this wouldn't be the case. While running, i had to push them back into my ears about once every minute because they would slowly edge their way out. They just didn't feel secure. I understand that everyone's ears are different and that mine might be abnormal somehow, but for $70 I can't help but be a little disappointed.

Skullcandy FIX are by far the best headphones I have ever had. I have had sennheisers, beats, ultimate ears and this one is by far the best. Its been a month since i bought them, still sound fantastic. They look incredible, do not fall out of your ear and the case is solid lowering the damage risk. I use a music equilizer ap on my Sensation XE and when i turn the bass to my "lowbass" setting i just cream my pants. I have to turn the equilizer off because in 30min my ears are sore from the vibrations of the deep bass. In terms of soundproof i would recommend these headphones to construction workers. I can not hear anything but the music with these plugged in My first time buying skullcandy and I am a very happy customer who will continue to buy them

Wonderfull Ear Buds
April 15th, 2012
by Chris
These are probably the best ear buds you can find on the market for the price. I really love the hook design, and the rear acoustic port for deep, clear bass. And the bass is truly the best with ear phones; it doesn't drown out the sound of guitars, or singing, but it's so clear that I'd even say the bass is better than the Skullcrusher's subwoofers. The only con I've seen so far with these guys is that the lows are a bit overpowering, which may not be a problem for most people, but if you love metal like me, it can get to you a little bit. But that is the smallest problem and can be easily overlooked. I love these headphones, they're wonderful for people who work out, and people who just want to listen to great sounding music. To top it off, these $70 ear buds beat down the Beats Tours. Those sound so rattly and hollow, while these sound so clear and deep.

Stayed in on a 2300 foot, 2 hour hike up a mountain. Stayed in on the 2 minute and 30 second snowboard ride down(even while doing end over end once).

Buds that never fall out of your ear!
April 9th, 2012
by Maggie
If you have ever had a problem with buds falling out (working out, hiking, riding, etc), these are your answer. The design makes it so they hook in your ear, and even while running, they stay in place. They also sound better than any of the other buds I've used during activities! If you just appreciate buds, but aren't active, you will still enjoy the quality of these buds over other brands. I love these headphones so much, I immediately replaced them when my first pair was stolen.

Quick Honest Review
April 8th, 2012

I'd always known Skullcandy for being awesome looking, but not sounding very good. When I got these I was skeptical after only buying them because of a deal I got from Promotive.com. With what I know now, I know I would have bought these even without the deal. I love how well they fit. I can go biking, rock climbing, or running without even a budge. They can actually hold up a fair amount of weight by themselves. They have actually saved my iPhone by catching it before it can hit the ground. The sound quality is in my opinion almost as good as $300 Bose ear-buds. (they even have decent bass for buds!) The biggest complaint is, that due to the odd shape, if you crush them even a little. they will snap sideways and break in half. the white plastic that makes up the main body of the buds seems like quite low quality and two the portions are held together only with glue. I know this because when I was getting used to them, they fell out of my ears, tangled in my legs and were stepped on. They broke completely, but I was able to get a replacement with few questions asked. Which really helped me like Skullcandy even more. (Enough that I plan on buying Aviator headphones soon)

I've owned FMJs, Ink'd, and other earbuds, even Shure's. I have always have a problem with them falling out of my ears, including the FMJ's. Sometimes they would just hurt my ears. I just two pairs of Fix in ear and, with the smallest bud on them, are perfect in my ear and do not fall out! And the comfort! I'm overjoyed. Best. Fit. Ever. Thank you, Skullcandy.

If you are having trouble deciding between in-ear headphones, look no further. I have owned almost all pairs of Skullcandy's in-ear headphones, and dang. These deliver! The bass is impeccable. It is deep and strong without sacrificing sound quality. The sound quality itself beats most all of their other headphones. I do enjoy having volume control. That is satisfying. The coolest part is the actual design of the headphones. They look awesome AND are functional. I actually spent the first five minutes of of the box tugging on the headphones while they were in my ears to see if they'd fall out. They won't fall out unless you really want them to. End of story. YOU'VE SOLVED THE PROBLEM OF BOARDERS ALL OVER THE WORLD!!! No more fishing out fallen out buds! If you are a snowboarder, I recommend these. I really do mean it when I say these are the best headphones I own. LONG LIVE SKULLCANDY!

Best choice for athletic use
February 5th, 2012

Unlike competitive headsets for active people, this headset works as advertised. I've tried competitive products ranging from Monster iSports to Yurbuds Ironman series, and I prefer the Skullcandy Fix to those options by a lot. The Fix actually stays in my ears without needing adjustment. The Yurbuds and iSports slip constantly, even though I tried every shape & size they offered. So, with the competitors' headsets, there was constant slipping and necessary re-adjustment, which is annoying when you're running, and the music is never quite at the volume level you desire, because as the earbuds slip, the music fades. The Fix fits perfectly in my ears and requires no maintenance while in the middle of a workout. The sound quality is great. These are the earbuds for me.

Amazing. Best earbuds I have ever listened to. Everyone hates when earbuds work themselvs out of your ear, making the sound quality worse, but these earbuds dont! They really are "fixd" and are great for exercising. If you are trying to decide weither to get these, or other buds in this price range, GET THESE!

The bass on these is insane

Honestly playing a song on half volume from my iphone feels like I'm slamming in a car with some subs. Real crisp and deep. Only thing I wish they would change is the cord type, it should be the nylon weave (it's much tougher and tanglefree). Otherwise I'm really happy my kaluas broke and they sent me these! Buy these over any other pair they sell hands down. I've had the FMJ's / kaluas / these and the other two don't compare at all. Also it has the volume control built into the mic / play / pause button which is key.

I was the owner of FMJ '09 and was very happy with them. They broke in the mic area and sent them in for warranty... I decided to try these out with the credit points and am disappointed. They sound good but not nearly as much bass as my old FMJ '09. I miss them now...

They sound amazing, great bass, look great, have an easily accessible control and mike, and fit really well. I'm not sure if they would stay put if I was running, but that's coming from a guy with three ear lobes. My ears are shaped super weird and they still stay put pretty well. I used to hate in ear buds, but these completely changed my mind. Best sounding, best looking, and most comfortable buds I've owned. On top of all that you get a sick lifetime warranty. GET YOUR FIX. my brother asked for these for christmas, and he (obviously) got them. he forgot them in his room, so i wanted to try them out. i've gotta say, these ear buds are AMAZING. they sound good, they stay in your ear, and they look good. i wore them on the tredmill and they didn't fall out!but, i just have one personal con. as far as i've searched, theres not a rasta version. they're my favorite color of buds. i know its kinda stupid to get worked up about it, but i would buy those earbuds with SO much more joy if i was buying the rasta ones.

For $70 i would like to have the nylon braided cable for easier untangling and strength and possibly a metal housing for better sound like the fmj's. Also the mic3 thing can kind of be hard to use. Changing the volume is easy but when it comes to clicking twice to go forward or 3 times for a previous song can some times be mixed up with the volume instead and will accidentally pause the song and adjust the volume instead. But other than that they are by far the most comfortable in ear headphones i have ever had. They stay in no matter what you are doing and still sound decent.

Great Headphones

These are great headphones. With every other ear buds that I have owned, they have never stayed in my ear when riding bmx or snowboarding. But with these, Skullcandy has solved that problem entirely. They also have great sound, and even on a low volume setting, the noise isolation is amazing. The only problems that I have had is the price, I think they are worth about $40 rather than $70. Also, sometimes there's a buzzing noise in the background of my music.

I was pretty much giving up on Skullcandy after my last 3 buds failed miserably. I sent them in for warranty credit and broke down and spent the money on the Fix In Ear. I am a field tech for a major utility and I have them in for probably 8 hours a day. They stay put, are extremely comfortable and sound great. I just hope I don't have the same trouble as the last 3(no sound/cracked cables).

I received these as a gift! Not going to lie, I hated earbuds and have always worn my over-the-ear headphones while working out. Earbuds hurt, they always make a cracking noise when I'm on the treadmill and they never stay in my ears. Well, I have to say I LOVE my FIX in-ear buds. I can wear them for an hour and my ears don't hurt, they don't move around and make that cracking noise and they don't fall out. Caught the cord one day on the treadmill and it about threw me off but they didn't come out of my ears! Use caution!! On top of all of that they have premium sound!
