REAL NAME: Nick Carter
HOMETOWN: Los Angeles, CA
BIO: Before appearing as a solo artist in 2003, Murs spent a decade working with various groups in the underground hip-hop community.
The Los Angeles based rapper released his first single in 1993, with his first group, 3 Melancholy Gypsies. Through time, the 3MGs became friends with an analogous west coast hip-hop crew, the Mystik Journeymen. The two groups later evolved into the Living Legends collective in 1996. Between both 3MGs and the Living Legends, Murs appeared on more than 20 records, EPs, and singles within a seven-year period.
In 1999, friend and fellow artist El-P started to pull together his emergent record label, Def Jux. Murs told El-P he would eventually release his solo record on Def Jux and in the spring of 2003 Murs finally delivered, The End of the Beginning. The album featured flashier production than his group projects and was more in tune with mainstream hip-hop.
Other projects include collaborations with Anticon rapper, Slug, under the alias Felt. Felt seemed to unveil a more experimental side to Murs’ and the three full-length albums stand apart from his solo projects.
The rapper persistently returned to solo work, completing Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition in 2004 and Murray's Revenge in 2006, in collaboration with producer 9th Wonder. In 2007 Murs signed contract with Warner Bros., his debut album for the label being Murs for President.
