Our exclusive SLYR headseat partnership with Assassin’s Creed® IV Black Flag (AC4) pledges freedom, independence, and a life lived— and lost— by the pirate’s code. Set sail in the series’ most richly imaged installation yet, published by Ubisoft® and drops in stores on October 29th. It centers on the Golden Era of Piracy, where plunder, exploration and fortune are the paramount goals of the main character: assassin-trained pirate Edward Kenway.
For those that haven’t dropped in on the now-iconic series, a little spoiler alert: fully realized audio cues and environmental sounds make a legit headset crucial to success, let alone survival. From the start, the SLYR’s Supreme Sound quality, flip up microphone communication capacity and ultra-comfortable design made it the ideal platform— Skullcandy took it to the next level by custom tuning audio profiles just for AC4.
“I used gameplay footage to help me emphasize the action sequences, which include stealth assassinations and huge seafaring cannon battles,” says Skullcandy engineer James Lang. “A good low-end response that gives the gamer a big subwoofer effect— without masking the game details— was important.”
Lang worked with Ubisoft producers to dial in the three-EQ settings that players can switch between with the AC4 SLYR.
“Ultimately we decided on a big sub 120Hz boost with a fair amount of detail,” says Lang. “It makes the action sequences scream! We also added a new detail mode that will be awesome for the stealth scenes and open world play.”
A third Supreme Mode lets players choose Skullcandy’s legendary full-frequency response— perfect for cluing into all the subtle and not so subtle environmental noises of the AC4 open world, like water, trees and voices. source
Throughout AC4 gameplay, Edward Kenway is doing work: leaping between the rigging of his ship the Jackdaw, diving off cliffs into the sea, or jamming across port town roof tops to escape authorities. The dynamic and explosive athleticism of free run parkour were always part of the Assassin’s Creed titles, and AC4 keeps that heritage up and, ahem, running. Scoring plunder, or threading through one of the complex and acrobatic escape scenarios, Kenway’s fast feet will for sure keep you on your toes.
True to the series, the AC4 open world offers myriad options for adventure, conflict, betrayal and exploration. Ubisoft’s commitment to historical accuracy keeps the storyline from spiraling into a young adult drama. No worries about missing your last social studies class— everything from the way that the Jackdaw sails, to the gaudy opulence of Caribbean towns like Nassau, was exhaustively researched. Even Kenway’s seemingly scattershot armaments and dirty combat style reflect the reality of how pirates fought and survived in the period. Gritty and nasty is just how things got done in the 1700’s. source
Once again, Ubisoft has laid it all on the line, investing the resources to produce an Assassin’s Creed title with the depth and blood-curdling excitement needed to get us fully hooked. If you’re anything like us, you’ll be pumped to walk the plank and leave normal life behind. Put on your AC4 SLYRs and weigh anchor.
