Skullcandy Presents: Week In Music 7.12.13

Freshies: Jay–Z Magna Carta…Holy Grail

All hail H.O.V.A. The “God of Rap” Jay-Z dropped his latest creation,  Magna Carta…Holy Grail for the masses this week (after already going platinum before it came out via Samsung’s limited release). Loaded with lyrics that go back and forth between his loathing of the downside of fame to the up’s of being ridiculously rich. In all honesty, the album is good but not his best. Magna Carta…Holy Grail doesn’t carry the same innovation as his previous records, lacking the creative enthusiasm that we look to Jay for. The album heavily relies on Timbalands producing skills, which are ahhhh-mazing, and cameo’s from Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean, Pharrell, and Beyonce definitely provide some diversity and life into the album. Our favorites are: “Holy Grail”, “Jay Z Blue” and “Heaven”.

Currently Obsessed With: Hot Chip “Dark & Stormy”

Ayeayeayeaye! Despite having just come out with, In Our Heads in the last year the boys seem to have some serious music momentum because this new track is everything Hot Chip. The single is a super fun, and gorgeous dance beat packed with all the synth and toe-tapping opportunities one could ask for. We’re hoping this means a new album is on its way soon.

Watch Out For: Jeremih

Alright, so maybe we’re just catching onto the rebirth of R&B because somehow it seemed to enter into our synth-era and in an indulgently good way. Jeremih has been gaining recognition in R&B and Soul since starting out in ’09, with nominations for best new artist and taking awards for best new entertainer, songwriter, and male vocalist, homeboy has definitely got skills but his beat “All The Time” is next level. Featuring Lil Wayne, and Natasha Mosley this beat gets gritty and we’re hoping there’s more to come.
