Designed from the ground up in our Park City office, the Sensation55™ driver was developed to bring new technology to headphones and bass-bliss to music lovers. Until the Sensation55™ driver, deep bass notes were hard to re-create as they were intended. When conceptualizing Crusher, our product development team always returned to the notion of feeling music at a live show - not just hearing it. The sensation of feeling the bass and re-creating it for a headphone experience became the driving force behind the development of Crusher.
The Sensation55™driver was created by the Advanced Concepts Engineering (A.C.E.) team in December of 2011 and pays homage to the original Skullcrusher headphone. Since the original Skullcrusher headphone was already carrying an amazing product feature story, it only made sense to try and continue the legacy. With this inspiration, we added to the Skullcrusher product family and continued to tell a unique message in the headphone world.
Within a month of idea conception, the initial interations of the driver were designed, prototyped, assembled into headphones and tested in our Park City Headquarters. The driver was immediately implemented into our Crusher headphone.
Stainless Steel Spring
The original Skullcrusher driver was made from a plastic material. Throughout the lifecycle of the product, the plastic would begin to fatigue and stretch, altering the performance of the driver. At the same time, hard impacts could actually rip parts of the diaphragm and render the driver useless. Temperature and humidity also had a huge effect on the performance of the material, creating a listening experience that could vary from user to user. It was also determined that the plastic diaphragm was the main limiting factor for keeping the resonance in the upper region.
When designing the Sensation55™ driver, we upped the ante and chose a stainless steel spring to provide the vibrating force. Steel is stronger, fatigue resistant and more consistent than its counterpart. Steel can also be stamped into almost any shape, giving the engineering team the ability to create a unique design that provided a resonance at the desired frequency. After hours of listening tests and analyzing the frequencies in popular music, it was determined that 55Hz was the magic number. Thus, the Sensation55™ was born. The sexy (yes, sexy) curves you see on the Sensation55™ driver reproduces the performance of a very large subwoofer in a small package. Until this driver was developed, resonance at 55Hz required a very large speaker. This is the first driver to re-create this performance in a headphone-capable size. Ta-da!
Tuned Resonance System
The old Skullcrusher drivers, which were initially off-the-shelf parts, were used as a starting point for the unique development of the Sensation55™ driver. At the very least, the new driver would have to match the intense level of tactile feeling provided by the original drivers, but do so in a unique way. For the audiophiles out there, this was done by reducing the natural frequency of the driver from ~100Hz (which is normally heard more than felt) to ~ 50Hz (which is actually felt more than heard). All other vibration headphones on the market perform in the region that is not actually meant to be felt. From there, the team set out for a goal of creating the first driver that resonates around 50Hz, accurately reproducing true deep bass sensation.
We are jonesed on the birth of Crusher and creating a new way for listeners to experience their music. Try it for yourself and change the way you not only listen to, but feel your music.
