Wrecked Metals is a mecca of motorized art - with projects that are elaborately built, meticulously painted, and admired by anyone who lays eyes on them. We were inspired to partner with Wrecked Metals to produce limited-edition pairs of Aviator headphones and Heavy Medal buds. Taking our cue from founder Matt Whitlock's custom hot rods, we emblazoned each with the Wrecked Metals logo and coated them in a custom slate blue that’s a match of Matt’s 1930 Chrysler - forever after to be christened “Wrecked Blue.”
Matt is the master behind the madness of the Idaho-based chop-shop, breathing life into the dreams of die-hard bike and car lovers. With a reputation for creating handcrafted, gas powered pieces of beauty, Wrecked Metals was founded in 2005 by Matt and crew. What started as a simple build-out project has turned into a profitable business in laid-back Boise where, according to Matt, “there is no pressure to look cool or be cool.” And yet, his builds are cool and his car club, the “Farm Boys”, even cooler.
The style comes from the classics of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s woven with a little skate culture. The builds are sometimes rough and aggressive, sometimes sleek with swooping lines, but every one is fitted with a raging powerplant. “The philosophy is that you have to nail the overall look,” says Matt, “Some people think you need this part, that part…but they miss the overall look.”
Having some bike enthusiasts in-house, Skullcandy began its relationship with Matt a few years ago when we were looking for someone to collab with in the hot rod and chopper Industry. Matt is a musician, skateboarder, and snowboarder himself; once the conversation started, there was a mutual feeling that we’d be a good fit for each other.
In addition to the headphones, we also teamed up with Wrecked Metals to design and build a custom Harley to be given away at this year’s Zumiez annual 100K celebration that honors salespeople who sold over $100k worth of merchandise. Creating the bike began when Pete Kelly our Director of Industrial Design who contacted Matt with the idea to create something unique to Skullcandy but familiar to Wrecked Metals. With a tight timeframe Matt already had a vision for the bike. He was able to find a project that had a beautifully polished and rebuilt motor which gave it a ‘70s feel that wasn’t over the top. As soon as the project started, Matt sent the tank off to Scott from Chemical Candy Customs, who found time in his busy schedule to paint the tank on short notice. The end result? The most beautiful bike, ever.
We're stoked on Matt and the rest of the Wrecked Metals crew for their wizardry in executing ideas and making them a reality, like Wrecked Metals on facebook for more deets on their upcoming projects. Check out more photos of the bike and subscribe to our Wrecked Metals playlist on Spotify below.
