You'd never guess that Jessica Stam grew up on the family farm in Ontario, Canada. It's true – we fact checked it. Today, she is one of fashion's top international stars, appearing on magazine covers and hitting the runways for the biggest names in the industry all across the globe. We were happy to spend just a few minutes with Skullcandy's new supermodel in New York, Jessica's current city of residence, to ask her about music, style and what it takes to get off the ground.
SKDY: How did you get your start in the modeling business?
JESSICA: Katie Grand and Mario Testino booked me for the Miu Miu campaign when I was 16 years old. Shortly after that, I met Steven Meisel and started working with him regularly.
SKDY: And if you weren’t a model, what would you be doing?
JESSICA: If I wasn't modeling, I might have been a marine biologist in Canada,
SKDY: How would you describe your own personal style, especially when you’re not on the runway or doing a shoot?
JESSICA: Classic, but with an edge. Always evolving and eccentric at times. I like to have fun with what I wear and express how I'm feeling through my style.
SKDY: What is the strangest thing you’ve been asked to do on a photo shoot?
JESSICA: Floating in a freezing cold pond in the south of France for eight days straight.
SKDY: What’s the word on you getting your pilot’s license – do you still fly?
JESSICA: Flying is still a big interest of mine but, unfortunately, I am no longer living close to an airport, which allowed me to practice frequently. I look forward to picking it back up in the future.
SKDY: How does music play a part in your life? Where did your taste originate?
JESSICA: Music is a major part of who I am today. My interest in music began in the 90s with Ace of Base, TLC, Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana, but currently my taste is quite diverse ranging from country to Justin Bieber, and everything in between.
SKDY: What's on the short list of your all-time favorites?
JESSICA: Cruel Summer by Bananarama, Platinum Plus by Big L feat. Jay Z, Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley, Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding, On the Road Again by Willie Nelson, andTell Mama by Etta James. (For more, see Jessica's Spotify playlist on our dedicated Music page)
