Mick Fanning won the 2012 Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Better yet, he did it by knocking out 11-time world champ Kelly Slater in the finals and pretty much dominating his other heats. It’s not very often that Kelly Slater loses, especially with a perfect 10 in his score line. But this Bells belonged to Mick. In the quarters Fanning dispatched fellow Skullcandy rider, Kai Otton, and then beat defending Bells champion, Joel Parkinson, in the semis.
In his first wave of the finals, Mick did an air that set the tone. Then he was patient to pick his waves, and for a time had Slater comboed. Slater would get his 10 with a one-maneuver wave, throwing one of the biggest airs ever in competition. Fanning wouldn’t be denied. He put up a 9.7 and then rode it out for his first win at Bells Beach since he was a teenage wildcard 11 years ago.
Congrats to Mick for earning his 14th Elite Tour win and also putting on what might have been the best final in the history of Bells Beach!
