The second installment of our four-part series in conjunction with Wax Poetics Magazine lived up to the billing we had hoped for. 1200 people packed into Le Poisson Rouge this past Thursday night to see three amazing performances. Starting the night off was Skullcandy’s own Young Big Mike who helped get the crowd ready, serving up an eclectic mix of funk, soul, and some NYC hip-hop. Next up was the first half of the headline, Wax Poetics artist Adrian Younge, along with his four-man crew. If you don’t know who Adrian Younge is, you have officially been put on notice. Get familiar. The performance he and his squad put on using a unique and varying array of live instruments really was something else (peep the upcoming video to see what we’re talking about). Finally, at about 1:00am, the main attraction appeared. Playing for the gracious and welcoming crowd until about 3:30 AM was none other than Lo Down Loretta Brown, a.k.a. Erykah Badu a.k.a. Fat Belly Bella! She threw it down for the adoring fans, many of whom have never seen her perform in such a close and personal venue, let alone seen her spin instead of singing. Erykah’s selections on the tables were perfect and well thought-out for the NYC audience. Although Erykah is known for her beautiful voice, if she keeps speaking with her hands the way she did Thursday night, we very well be saying the same thing about her on the DJ tip.
Up next, Thursday, September 29th Skullcandy presents Wax Poetics Records Music Showcase #3 with DJ Premier & Kendra Morris, who have been working on a few tracks for Kendra’s first album release on Wax Poetics Records and should create some live magic together on stage. Just like the first two, it’s another one that shouldn’t be missed! Stay tuned for this and the upcoming video of Erykah Badu & Adrian Younge.
