Name: Martini Skate + Snow
Locations: Northfield and Cleveland Heights Ohio
In the fall of 2006, Martini Skate and Snow opened as a venue to support the connection of fashion, art, and street culture to skateboarding and snowboarding style. Located in Northfield, Ohio (just south of Cleveland) and now in Cleveland Heights (just east of downtown), the shop was conceived from the idea that skateboarding and snowboarding are defined by personal style and originality.
Taking nods from movements on the East and West Coasts and blending a boutique atmosphere with a board shop, Martini Skate and Snow offers the latest and limited inspired by street and snowboard-influenced style.
A fusion of form and functionality, Martini’s selection is a culmination of core brands driven by people who skate and ride. Not only does Martini offer the best in core skateboard and snowboard brands, the shop also specializes in premium apparel, footwear and accessory brands.
So what’s in a name? In ancient Latvia, Martini was the name of a festival celebrated on November 10, marking the end of the fall and the beginning of winter. The festival marks the passage from Usins to Martins, two horse deities. Usins is invoked during the summer, while Martins is a winter god. The festival marked the end of the preparations for winter, such as salting meat and fish, storing the harvest and making preserves. Martini also marked the beginning of masquerading and sledding, among other winter activities.
We asked Martini’s Mike Tirpak a few random questions, here’s what he had to say.
Q: What is your personal favorite SKDY headphone and why?
A: I like to keep it simple and snowboard with some music playing out of my Icon2s. They’re comfy and have a nice low profile -fits under my goggle band.
Q: What is the most attractive mammal you’ve ever seen naked? Explain.
A: My wife! No other answer would get me sweet, sweet lovin! LOL.
Q: 2Pac or Biggie?
A: How about a Girl Talk version of both?
Q: Where do babies come from?
A: Multiple drinks.
Q: Why do birds suddenly appear / every time you are near?
A: Cause the bird is the word. Or I just washed my car . . . F’n A.
Q: What is your 5-song shop playlist?
A: It depends who’s working the iTunes. Most of my selections would come from old snowboard movies…
